Physical Education is an important part of our pupils' education here in St Tola's. Each child receives a minimum of 60 minutes PE per week. All of our junior classes complete 5 of the 6 PE strands and our Senior classes complete all 6 strands as outlined below.
Athletics
Games
Aquatics
Dance
Gymnastics
Outdoor and adventure
Throughout the year different specialised coaches come to our school to enhance the pupils' learning and provide a varied selection of physical activities for them to engage with.
This year our 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes all received a 7 week block of swimming lessons in Mullingar Swimming Pool with their qualified instructors.
The children who attended the lessons also completed the PAWS water safety lessons before Christmas.
Last year we invested in sports equipment to further develop the children's learning under the strand of Athletics. New shot puts, javelins, discuses and hurdles meant that all of our pupils were better abled to develop their jumping, and throwing skills.
Games was our focus strand this year. Teacher's completed CPD training in Olympic Handball and FAI coaches came to our school to upskill our pupils in Futsal. This was of course in addition to
GAA coaching
Tag Rugby
Tennis
Rounders
Basketball
FAI primary schools 5 a side
Every class received 2 blocks of Dance teaching as per our whole school plan. In addition to this our junior classes received dance lessons from an external dance teacher for 6 weeks.
Outdoor and Adventure is always a popular strand here in St Tolas. Children enjoy the PSSI lessons and we are lucky to have Ogles forest on our doorstep. Here the whole school gets to enjoy a fun filled day of walking and outdoor challenges.
A big thank you to our senior pupils for all their hard work maintaining our PE equipment throughout the year. They are also responsible for putting out the required equipment for our Active Yard Breaks.
This year our local GAA club, Delvin GAA, provided us with a games development officer for the year. As a result every class grouping received 18 weeks of GAA coaching in hurling and football.
Our Junior Infants, Senior Infants and First classes received 6 weeks of Katate lessons from Liam Darcy of Ultimate Karate Fitness
Term 3 of every school year means lots of things, good weather, Cumann na mBunscoil games, school tours and TENNIS. Fergus from Mullingar Tennis club always brings lots of energy to our school. Every class receives 6 weeks of tennis training through fun engaging activities. Thanks Fergus!
