Last year our school decided to implement the Active School Flag initative. Active School Flag (ASF) is a Department of Education initiative supported by Healthy Ireland, and part of the National Physical Activity Plan. The ASF initiative provides schools with a framework to guide, support and incentivise them to work towards achieving a physically educated and physically active school community.
We decided to implement the ASF initiative in our school because;
The process incentivises schools to engage in a process self-reflection, action planning and collaboration at whole school level.
ASF encourages schools to strengthen their PE programmes and to promote physical literacy.
ASF supports schools to identify strategies to energise the school day and to reduce sedentary time.
ASF promotes physical activity in a FUN, positive and inclusive way.
ASF guides schools to create their own specific roadmap for sustained physical activity practices.
ASF provides students with voice, space, influence and audience to participate in the decision-making process of their school.
ASF generates a support network for schools where best practise, innovation and successful initiatives are showcased, affirmed and shared.
ASF empowers schools to develop and strengthen partnerships with parents, local organisations and national agencies.
To achieve the Active School Flag we started by self-evaluating our current provision across PE, Physical Activity and Partnerships. We then planned and implemented improvements that continue to have a real and tangible impact on our school community. We already have a very strong history of physical activity and team sports with after-school and during-school activities in place. We continue to introduce a variety of activities to the children in our school such as Karate, Tennis, GAA, Tag Rugby, Swimming and Dance. As part of the Active School programme, we organised an Active Schools Week in April. This is a whole school initiative, with exciting activities and lots of fun and games to look forward to. One of the aims of Active Schools Week is to show that not only is physical activity good for you but it can also be lots of fun and a great way to spend time with friends.

At the start of this year we recommenced our active breaks initiative. 5th and 6th class pupils adhere to a weekly rota and are in charge of playing playground games with our infants and two first classes. For the first term we are focusing on simple games that incorporate 3 of our 4 fundamental movement skills.
