As highlighted at the start of the year, our Year 8 students are lucky enough to be able to take part in the Mountains to Sea Programme. The Mountains to Sea programme empowers schools and communities by providing hands-on experiences in marine and freshwater environments.
The Mountains to Sea Conservation Trust – Experiencing Marine Reserves (EMR) and Whitebait Connection (WBC) programme specialises in marine and freshwater education. The programme involves investigating marine and freshwater biodiversity and environments before venturing to the fully protected marine reserve, Goat Island. After this experience, students will be able to compare unprotected and protected areas and are supported to put their knowledge into action within the community.
The major opportunities our students have over Terms 1 and 2 are:
Wednesday 25th March - Local Beach Investigation/Snorkelling at St Heliers Beach
Monday 30th March - Trip to Goat Island including snorkelling and stream investigation (Back up date 1st May) We need to leave school at 8am and arrive back approximately 4 - 4:30pm
Monday 4th May - Local stream investigation and facilitated action at Selwyn or St John's bush (Back up date 6th May)
Wednesday 25th March - Local Beach Investigation/Snorkelling at St Heliers Beach
Arrive at school at the usual time. We will be walking down to St Heliers Beach.
What to bring
School/students to bring:
- Hats
- Sensible mufti
- Togs and towel
- Sun cream
- Water
- Tea/lunches
- Closed-toed shoes
- Personal medication (eg. epi pens, inhalers)
What MTSCT will provide
- Gazebo/shade cover
- Snorkel gear for students and supervisors
- All scientific equipment and resources
- First aid kit
- All necessary health and safety documents
Monday 30th March - Trip to Goat Island including snorkelling and stream investigation (Back up date 1st May)
We need to leave school at 8am and arrive back approximately 4 - 4:30pm.
Arrive at school at 7:45. We will be travelling up to Goat Island by bus

*note: Bring additional fresh drinking water as there is none on site.
