Social Studies will be taught for a 50 minute lesson each week. Our initial focus will be on 'Aotearoa New Zealand Histories', beginning with learning about Te Tiriti o Waitangi to align with the relevance of Waitangi Day. Through these lessons, students will build an understanding of New Zealand’s past, key perspectives, and their significance today. Later in the year, learning will expand to include more global social studies topics. These units will be more fully developed closer to the time, and further information about the specific topics will be communicated to parents and whānau later on.
Year 7 and 8 students are in for an exciting and hands-on term in science! Through a variety of fun and engaging experiments, students will explore how scientists work by making observations, testing hypotheses and analysing their results using the scientific method. Along the way, they will also learn how to clearly record and write up their experiments, building strong scientific and communication skills. It’s set to be a lively term full of curiosity, discovery and practical learning!
Throughout the term, students will have the opportunity to experience an even wider range of curriculum opportunities. These will happen through rotations among the Year 7 and 8 teachers and will include:
Sport Science: students will learn about how their bodies work through movement and analysis. They will explore muscles, bones, movement, and fitness so they can understand how to move safely and improve performance through both in-class learning and practical activities.
Media Studies: students will explore how media messages are created, shared, and interpreted, helping students understand how media influences opinions, behaviour, and society.
Coding: gives students the chance to learn how coding works by designing games, solving problems, and bringing ideas to life.
Service: students will have the opportunity to learn about the importance of service within a community. They learn about servant leadership and how to bring the best out in others.
Extreme Weather: students will learn about the different types of extreme weather we experience on Earth. They will understand how the weather works and the impact it can have on people and the environment.
Debating: students will learn the skills involved in debating, from researching the topics to engaging in a debate.
