In a Catholic school the special character is also known as the Catholic Character. This is not something that is simply added on to what would otherwise be a secular state school. Nor does it merely refer to religious education, ceremonies and observances.
The Catholic Character is the framework within which the whole school curriculum is delivered; it is, in fact, integral to everything that takes place in the school, or on behalf of the school and its community. Properly observed and practised, it also provides a climate of hope, inspiration and service for all members of the school community.
"First and foremost, every Catholic educational institution is a place to encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and truth." (Pope Benedict XVI in 2008)
We proclaim the Gospel as a means of bringing people to Christ.
We provide for Children's spiritual growth through prayer, liturgy and sacrament.
We plan experiences of service to others within school, in our community and through Caritas programmes.
We learn about ways to support tika, through Caritas programmes. We apply restorative justice within our behaviour management.
Our Mercy charism, and the messages of St Thérèse of Lisieux are celebrated and encouraged.
We celebrate Lent, Easter, Advent, Lent, and the Feast Days of Sts Joachim and Anne (Grandparents' Day), St Thérèse, and the Feast of The Assumption.
Effective teaching and learning principles help children to encounter the living God through our local curriculum...

Tamariki develop religious literacy that will enable them to articulate their increasing knowledge and understanding about faith.
The foundation and guiding principles for all our work is Catholic social teaching, a body of thought on social issues that has been developed by the Church over the past hundred years. Refer to https://caritas.org.nz/catholic-social-teaching
