Here you will find multiple sources of evidence showing that virtually all my students in class 602 & 603, including special populations - students with disabilities (SWD) and English language learners (ELL) - have achieved substantial gains on New York State Common Core Standards as seen through their growth on the Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) Assessment.
Degrees of Reading Power® is a quick, simple measure of literacy skills, meant to measure a student’s comprehension of text passages. While many other assessments test reading “skills,” like phonetics, vocabulary, and mastery of sentence structure, DRP measures a student’s overall ability to comprehend and critically absorb passages of text.
DRP scores are precise, reliable indicators of student reading comprehension. On a scale from 1-100, DRP scores are aligned to grade level entry and exit levels, so educators can use it as a screener, progress monitor, and end-of-grade growth measure.

One of my students with initials CC, is an ELL student I have had the pleasure of teaching for two years now. Last year, I felt very challenged by the task of differentiating for a student who barely spoke English - it was my first true ELL student. Refusing to fail her, I worked tirelessly to learn new strategies and get to develop a relationship with her so that I could best meet her needs. Despite my best efforts, that year, Charleny did not show much growth or meet the expectations needed to move on to 7th grade.
At the start of this new school year, I delighted to see her and have a second chance to help her reach her potential. I told her from day one that "this is your year!" I increased the time I spent with her conferencing and providing constructive, actionable feedback and asked her to let me know the best ways to help her. Furthermore, I work very closely, planning & analyzing CC's work & data in order to develop plans that best meet her needs.
So far this year, I am beyond proud to share that Charleny has growth SIGNIFICANTLY in all areas of reading, writing, listening, speaking, & overall critical thinking. Her DRP scores went up a total of 21+ points from the fall to the winter & she has blossomed as a writer, scoring a 3.5 on the TC Argument Writing Rubric on her most recent essay!
These report measures student growth across basic reading skills (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension of fictional and nonfictional texts), which are all relative to targets set by the district. As indicated by both reports (class 604 & 602), my students EXCEEDED their 100% growth target for the year by the winter. Note: the STARS indicate my ELL students.
