Counseling
Counseling at St. Rita Catholic School emphasizes the importance of students’ social, emotional, academic, and behavioral well-being. School counselors support students through individual and group counseling, as well as classroom guidance lessons. Counselors also collaborate with parents and staff to support student success. Students may request to see a counselor by asking their teacher or submitting a counselor request form. Parents and teachers may refer a student for counseling by contacting the counselors via email or phone. Counselors work with parents and teachers to develop support plans for students who benefit from ongoing counseling services. When needs extend beyond what can reasonably be provided within the school setting, counselors and administrators may recommend outside professional support.
School counseling confidentiality is an ethical obligation that helps foster trust between students and counselors. While information shared by students is kept private, confidentiality may be broken in situations involving risk of harm to self or others, suspected abuse or neglect, or when required by law. Counselors balance students’ right to privacy with parental rights and the responsibility to maintain a safe school environment.
If a student is sent home due to a mental health concern, “Return to School” documentation will be required. Once documentation is received, counselors and administrators retain final authority in determining when the student may return to school.
As part of counseling support services, students may use VR headsets for brief (5–10 minute) guided experiences designed to promote self-regulation and reduce stress and anxiety. All content is pre-loaded and approved, and the devices are not connected to Wi-Fi.
School counselors are available during school hours only. In the event of an emergency outside of school hours, please call 911.
