Kindergarten Soft Start: Questions & Answers
Soft Start is a process we use during the first week of kindergarten to help ensure every child is placed in the classroom that is the best fit for their learning and social-emotional needs.
During Soft Start, students may spend time in different kindergarten classrooms. This allows all kindergarten teachers to get to know each child and observe how they learn, interact with peers, follow routines, and respond to different classroom environments.
The goal is to create balanced classrooms where all students can be successful. Teachers work together to consider a variety of factors, including personalities, learning styles, strengths, social dynamics, and individual needs. Temporary classroom changes help us make thoughtful placement decisions.
Not at all. It is a normal and intentional part of the Soft Start process. Many students will have opportunities to spend time with different teachers and classmates as we learn more about each child.
Kindergarten teachers collaborate throughout the week, sharing observations and information about students. Together, they determine classroom placements that will provide the best learning environment for all children.
Families will be notified of their child's permanent classroom placement at the end of the Soft Start week.
We understand that families may have preferences; however, classroom placements are made carefully by the kindergarten team based on what will best support all students. For this reason, we ask families to trust the placement process.
Soft Start helps us:
Get to know each child as an individual
Create balanced classrooms
Build positive peer groups
Match students with learning environments where they can thrive
Set students up for a successful kindergarten year
Encourage your child to be flexible, make new friends, and try new experiences. Reassure them that all of the kindergarten teachers are excited to get to know them and help them have a wonderful year.
Our goal is simple: to make sure every child starts kindergarten in the classroom where they can learn, grow, and be successful all year long!
