Summer Reading Assignment
Summer Reading Assignment
As the ELA teacher for grade 8, I encourage all of you to make reading a regular part of your lives. Reading is one of the most effective ways for you to increase your reading comprehension, grammar skills, and writing ability. In addition, reading expands your experiential background and allows you to learn about people, places, and things that you might never experience in any other way.
For your summer reading assignment, you are to choose just one of the books on the attached Recommended Summer Reading list from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
Then complete the assignments by following these instructions.
After you have read your chosen book from the list, you must type and answer the 4 questions listed below in their entirety. For example, for number one, you will type the words, Summary: Describe the book’s plot – what was the story about?)
Type each question. Below the question, type the answer. When you answer the question, use evidence from the book. Be sure that you are writing your answer in complete sentences. Each answer should be one paragraph long. (a paragraph is at least 3-5 sentences) Use 12 font and double space.
Create an attractive cover for your paper. Be sure to put your name, grade and the date on the bottom right hand corner of your cover.
See the attached Rubric for the grading scale.
The summer assignment is due on Tuesday, September 12th.
Questions:
Summary: (Describe the book’s plot – what was the story about?)
Favorite Scene: Describe, with details, the setting of your favorite scene in the book. Be sure to include where and when this scene is taking place. Include the chapter and page numbers.

Summer Grammar Assignment
Knowing the basics of grammar is an essential key to becoming a proficient writer. Without a clear understanding of word usage, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization, writing becomes a difficult task. In order to continue strengthening your grammar skills, this year, you will be completing a summer grammar assignment.
Complete the Simple Solutions lessons that are provided in this packet. You should be familiar with most of the concepts that are presented in these lessons. Please refer to the Help pages in the back of the book for helpful hints and explanations to help you with the grammar questions.
Please bring this packet with you when you return to school. The due date is Tuesday, September 12th. We will begin reviewing these lessons during our first full week of school.
