What is happening?
Science and Technology are being taught throughout the school to help students have a better understanding of the natural and physical world. The year 7/8 students attend John Paul II High School for Science and Technology whilst the other classes participate in lessons within their classroom.
Why is this happening?
Science is able to inform problem solving and decision making in many areas of life. Students develop an understanding of the world we live in and can use scientific knowledge to help inform them to make decisions in the future.
The aim of technology is for students to have broad technological knowledge and practices that will help them participate in society as informed citizens.
With the Yr 7/8 ‘s attending John Paul II High School it gives them the opportunity to be taught by specialist teachers of the subject areas.
What does this mean?
Teachers will teach the students of St Patrick’s about the natural and physical world and guide them to make decisions for the future and our planet.
With the Year 7/8 ‘s attending John Paul II High School for Science and Technology it helps build relationships with staff and makes transition to secondary school easier for all.
Next steps
Continue to provide opportunities and a variety of experiences for the students to engage in their learning.
Look at purchasing science equipment that is appropriate for specific age groups and having the correct quantity for a class set.
What other digital devices could be purchased for students to develop their skills in digital technology?

Eden use the ipads before lunch to follow up on skills taught in the morning. The apps we currently use include Seesaw- All curriculum and Epic- reading. We are looking into getting another app on the ipads for our juniors students, possibly Maths Seeds?
Students know Miss Doig sends photos home via seesaw for their families to see. If they create something they are super proud of they have learnt that they can ask for a photo and get it sent home to their family.
Adam and Austin were happy with their creations so before putting it away they quickly got a photo to share!
Eden and Bethlehem - Solids, Liquids and Gases
Each term we have a different science focus. We have started this year with "The Material World" conducting experiments to investigate solids, liquids and gases. We follow the scientific method and record our experiments in a big shared book. We concluded this terms learning with a visit from Science in Van who performed their show "The Wonderful World of Bubbles". It was fantastic to see and hear the children making connections with what we had been learning in class to what they saw at the show.
Samaria have enjoyed learning about changing states of Solids, Liquids and Gases. We have conducted experiments with different factors, starting with water / ice / gas. I loved their faces when I explained that boiling water was a non toxic Gas. Then I used Helium to show the students invisable Gas. The class went crazy when Science in a Van used a different method with helium.
Nazareth
Nazareth have been learning about solids, liquids and gases as a class. We finished by making some ice cream together.
Zion
This year has brought an exciting new opportunity for Zion students – their very own Chromebooks! They've already learned about the important Kawa of Care to ensure their devices are looked after. The students have been absolutely thrilled to use their Chromebooks for "epic reading" sessions and are clearly enjoying this fantastic new learning tool.

Science and Technology for our Year 7 & 8 students
On Saint Patrick's Day our senior students where challenged to create a catapult that could accurately fire for distance and height. They undertook a design, reflect and improve process to ensure they could deposit the 'gold' at the end of the rainbow.
Year 7 & 8 Science and Technology Day at John Paul II
Students are very excited to attend JPII for one full day a fortnight to experience authentic learning in the science and technology space. They attend a science class in the lab, and alternate between technology, art and language classes.
Participation in the John Paul II Science Fair is a highlight for our senior students!
In Term 1 Cana attended Science in a Van where the students learned about different states of matter. Cana learners have spent time this term learning about blogging and how to create their own blog post. We have had fun creating these posts and now we are also going to focus on commenting on our class blogs and others within the Toki group here in Greymouth. Our blogs are a fun way to share our learning with whanau.
2023-2024

In Nazareth this term, we have been learning about growing plants as part of our topic. We learned that in the olden days, they didn't have refrigeration and supermarkets so it was important that they were able to grow their plants/food. We took this opportunity to learn about plant life cycles and what things plants need to survive.
In Term 3 of 2023, the junior school was learning about clouds and weather events. In Nazareth, the children were learning about the water cycle, and then they created their own rain clouds. They had to add water and shaving cream to a cup, then they added food coloring. As the food coloring dripped through the shaving cream cloud, it created a visual display of the rain/food coloring coming down. My class's favorite word during this topic was cumulonimbus, which is a type of rain cloud. We also created landslides out of shoeboxes, plaster of Paris, polystyrene, paint, and twigs. We learned all about how landslides happened first, then the kids created their art.
Science in a Van:
Learning about forces and friction through the story of the 3 Billy goats gruff.
Teachers have been using lesson plans including videos, follow ups and discussion points around being safe on the internet. The learning is made appropriate and fun for juniors through the use of Hector's World videos on Youtube where a dolphin helps the children to learn how to be safe. Within Hector's World students learn how to be safe through learning who to trust, how to set a username, who to share our personal information with, what to do when we feel unsafe on the internet and what things may occur when online and what to do. This year in Samaria the students did role plays and made a safety book. The students really enjoyed these lessons and were fully engaged. They are able to identify how to be safe on the internet and can hold discussions around what is occurring in each Hector's World lesson.

The senior school had Science in a Van visit them where they learnt all about Matter. It was a fun, engaging and entertaining show that the children thoroughly enjoyed. A great way to introduce a science concept!
At the core of biology and other sciences lies a problem-solving approach called the scientific method. The scientific method has five basic steps, plus one feedback step: Make an observation. Ask a question. Form a hypothesis, or testable explanation. Make a prediction based on the hypothesis. Test the prediction. Iterate: use the results to make new hypotheses or predictions.
Our Science and Technology learning encourages intellectual and practical solutions through the design making, and experimental, processes. Students develop an understanding of the world we live in and can use scientific knowledge to help inform decisions, challenge their thinking and critically evaluate the world around them.
The aim of technology is for students to have broad technological knowledge and practices that will help them participate in society as informed citizens.
With the Yr 7/8 ‘s attending John Paul II High School it gives them the opportunity to be taught by specialist teachers of the subject areas and build valuable relationships.
Science Fair
Each year the Year 7/8 students visit JPII and participate in a science class where they work towards a project for the annual science fair. They are required to think of a scientific question and then set about creating a hypothesis and create an experiment to answer their question. It is to be presented in a way that can be entered into the annual science fair at JPII.
Science and Technology at JPII
Each year the Year 7 and 8 students attend science and technology at JPII. This is a great opportunity for our children to be taught by specialist teachers in specific areas. The children learn subject specific skills and have the opportunity to use tools, machinery and equipment that we are not able to have on our site.
Jerusalem conducted an experiment using a siphon to explore the concept of pressure and gravity.
They conducted the experiment and then had to write up their findings.
