What is happening?
Mathematics is being used to explore patterns, and relationships in quantities, space, and time. Equipping students with the skills to investigate, interpret, explain and make sense of the world
Why is this happening?
This is happening so that students can make sense of the world around them. Numbers and shapes are all around us and we come in contact with them many times daily.
What does this mean?
This means students need a strong foundation in mathematical knowledge and strategies. They need to have the resilience to be able to persevere with problem-solving.
Next steps
For the teachers to continue to find and use ways to make math engaging and fun for students. To develop the students’ understanding of mathematical concepts that they can use throughout their education and in their adult lives.

Eden
Subitizing in pairs with a small dice.
Cutting and pasting numbers into the correct order.
Making a range of patterns with cubes.
Maths learning via Seesaw on the iPads.
In Eden we complete a range of Maths activties throguhout the day to hit the 1 hour target. We start every moring completing our 100 days board where we learn about numbers, odd/even, tally marks, writing numbers and predicting colours. After prayers we come back to Maths and work in small groups or whole class, this is explicit teaching followed up with a game, worksheet or task. This time will soon be driven by Numicon which teachers have attended a short course for and spent release time gathering a clearer understanding.
Bethlehem
Exciting times this year for our Maths learning with the roll out of the new Mathematics Curriculum and our new Numicon resources. We use the structured teaching approach including daily reviews, explicit whole class teaching, hands on materials, games and written work. Students are assessed regularly and grouped for target teaching to specific learning needs. The Junior Syndicate teachers have recently attended Professional Development on how to implement the Numicon program highlighting the importance of the use of concrete materials when learning mathematical concepts.
In Samaria we have been learning maths using a wide range of resources and equipment from the new Numicon scope and squence. Alongside the Numicon progressions which has been structured to help children develop deep understanding of Number, Pattern and Calculating, with Geometry, Measurement and Statistics. All of this aligns with the principles of the refreshed New Zealand mathematics curriculum. In addition with Structured Maths Approach which I started teaching last year, which these students are thriving from.

Nazareth
In Nazareth we continue to learn maths through use of materials and hands on experiences. We explore maths concepts using every day tasks where possible. We are using the new curriculum and have began to use numicon to help to continue to support our students to understand math concepts which can be quite abstract using concrete examples.
Zion students are diving into a range of mathematical concepts with our new curriculum! Recently, they've been focusing on place value, algebra, and multiplication. A key component of their learning has also involved using the 100 chart to develop fluency in counting on and back from any number. The introduction of Numicon has been a particular highlight, offering a hands-on and exciting way for students to explore mathematical ideas.

Cana and Galilee started off the year by stating their holiday in Maths.
Cana and Galilee students continue to learn maths using a wide range of resources, materials and experiences. We use a structured teaching approach which includes daily maintenance, basic facts practice, whole class and differentiated group learning. We are currently working through the new maths curriculum that has come out this year and in Term 1 we focused on Place Value and Number Operations (addition, subtraction and multiplication). We use a range of resources to consolidate our learning such as worksheets, maths buddy, practical tasks and our new Oxford maths text book that the Government has provided.
Within our senior school we have begun to embed the new mathematics curriculum in several ways. Students continue to improve their basic facts recall through daily practice. They also complete weekly maths maintenance worksheets and are introduced to new concepts and consolidation practice within the MathsBuddy digital platform. Students are also grouped according in their learning needs, experiencing explicit teaching and hands on, authentic learning tasks.
An example of students learning in their MOE provided workbooks. This programme also has a digital component for both teachers and students.
Students create and use tools to support their understanding of new concepts.
To assist with their learning, the senior school use the online platform of Maths Buddy to reinforce the learning that they are doing in class.

In Eden we use many different ways to reach our Maths Goals. We use Maths Seeds on the Ipads where students complete a test and the app creates activities suitable for the individual learner. We also use worksheets whether it be colour by number, cut and paste to match numbers to items or write/ draw appropriate answers. Lastly, we use a range of Maths games students know where these live in two red boxes and have full access to choose which game they would like to play, we sometimes play whole class games to ensure students have an understanding of the games available.
In Bethlehem we start each Maths session with a "Maths Daily Review". This allows students to practise and consolidate knowledge and strategies they are learning. We use a variety of number tools, games and hands on equipment to support students with their learning. Acquisition of mathematical knowledge and strategies is sequential. Diagnostic and formative assessment is used to target learning needs and next steps to ensure each child is learning at their level.
A structured scope and sequence that serves as the backbone of effective teaching and learning. It provides a clear roadmap, ensuring that each concept builds upon the foundation laid before it. By carefully sequencing mathematical topics and activities, by empowering our young learners to gradually develop their skills and confidence. With a well-organized structure, I can create a supportive learning environment that allows our students to thrive, leading to a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts. Paired with math games and activites in their rotation boxes. These games help build strategic thinking and problem solving skills.
In Nazareth we have been learning about shapes this time we had rotations where students were able to manipulate and create shapes. This was a lot of fun and the kids loved it so much we had to do another round for them with longer time frames so they could complete their masterpieces.

Students in Capernaum learn through whole class teaching, differentiated and mixed group learning and discussion, and individual and collaborative tasks.
Using a range of strategies, resources and approaches to grow their mathematical knowledge, strategical/critical thinking and problem solving skills. A range of resources, digital platforms and hands on experiences help our students to ensure new knowledge, skills and concepts are consolidated and able to be utlised in a range of contexts.
The senior school has invested in the programme Maths Buddy to assist with the children's learning. Maths Buddy is an online programme that the teachers can set work for their students to go along side the work in their classroom programme. It is designed so the children can access it anywhere, anytime and a great tool to practice their maths skills.
Basic facts are completed daily in the senior school. This repetition helps build knowledge, speed and accuracy in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Children are timed and their scores are recorded to track their progress.
In Jerusalem, learning in maths is done in multiple ways. Basic facts and math maintenance are expected to be completed each week as well as activities that are based on their groups learning. Each group will have worksheets which lead on from what they are learning as well as an electronic workbook which are created and designed for the learners to practice their new skills. The use of Maths Buddy is also important as we can set follow up activities for the children to be working on in their independent learning time.
Learner voice: Mathematics allows our learners many opportunities to develop agency in their learning as the work in small groups and as a whole class. This gives them opportunities to express their learning and share knowledge amongst each other while thinking critically, problem-solving and developing their mathematical language in an authentic context. Learners also track and reflect on their mathematical learning using Curriculum and the Numeracy Project progressions, daily basic facts data, and by evaluating self set mathematical goals.
Special Character: Students are learning how to problem-solve together. They are learning about the important virtues of diligence, patience, and kindness. Some students find mathematics challenging and they are learning that working hard and being patient will help them to solve problems. We also have the ability to show our special character to others in the community while we are out in competitions or hosting people.
Te Tiriti O Waitangi: Learners experience with and are explicitly taught te reo Māori within their Mathematics learning. Culturally inclusive practices and learning approaches (such as oratory and movement based learning) are utilised in our learning environment.
