Welcome back to another term full of learning for our ākonga. Term 2 has started with learners jumping back into their routines of learning groups. We were so happy to welcome many of you to take part in our Literacy workshops this week. Partnering with each other to support your children will ensure the best progress possible. If you missed the workshops, the slides can be found here.
This term, we are preparing for our Learner Led Conferences in Week 5, when we look forward to updating you on your child's progress and celebrate their successes with you! There will also be many activities to see and take part in our learning hubs. At the end of Term 2, you will also receive a report from your child's teacher with a further update about how they are doing in their learning.
The team are always happy to support you; if you have any questions about your child's learning, please do not hesitate to contact the teaching team.

This term, our focus is Diversity and our focus is on exploring the diverse roles of people in the wars, following our ANZAC learning. We are then going to explore the diverse range of people who have done amazing things. When we talk about diversity, we will be referencing different ethnicities, religions, disabilities and neurodiverse people! Learners will research and learn about people who inspire them.
Towards the middle of the term, we will be writing 'Stories from 2050', where learners will imagine themselves in the future, what careers they might be working in and write stories based on this. At our Learner Led Conference evening, we will have prompts for parents to tell us what skills and knowledge you need in your jobs and what you predict might be needed in the future.
As we move towards the end of the term, learners will think about what skills they need to practise and get better at. There will be teacher-led break through projects for learners to opt into. For example, if learners think that their communication skills need to improve, there will be a project based on this.
We will also be looking at biodiversity of marine life around New Zealand, building our knowledge about the diverse variety of creatures found on our shores and those that are facing extinction due to humans. We will be writing letters to persuade others to help make a difference.
SchoolTalk is the number one place to go to, to see what your child has been learning about.
You could ask your child:
'What have you been reading about this term?'
'How do your reading and writing link together?'
'How do I find your tracking document?'
'How do your maths sessions work?'
At the end of every day, our team has put Year 5-6 Home Learning ideas (you will see this in the calendar between 3pm and 4pm).
These slides contain a range of websites and helpful links for your child to complete at home.
Mōhio is an excellent website for learners to practise their basic facts, times and division tables.
By the end of Year 6, learners should know their times tables up to 10 x 10. The easiest tables to start with are the 2s, 5s, 10s, this is followed by 3s, 4s & 6s, and 7s, 8s, 9s.
If your child does not know their times tables, it would be great to support them with this, by allowing your child time to practise them at home.
Chromebooks
Learners should ensure they bring their Chromebooks to school each day, charged. This is part of our Kawa of Care agreement. Learners should charge their device at home.
Absence/Lateness
If your child has an appointment or is going to be late, you can log this using the EDGE app.
Library and PE days
Library days for Term 2: Hub 12 goes to the library on Tuesdays and Hub 11 goes to the library on Wednesdays. All learners can take up to 3 books out. It is expected that every learner takes books regularly from the library.
PE Days: Learners can check SchoolTalk to see when their PE days are for the week ahead.
