Chesterfield, Henrico, Richmond, and surrounding divisions offer a variety of specialty center options available to students residing in the county. Interested in math and science? There are centers for that! Performing arts? Absolutely! Want to own your own business or be a leader? They have programs for those as well! Those are just a few of the programs available. You can consider these as “schools within schools.” Students who attend take coursework needed for graduation while also taking classes towards their specialty. These are wonderful options for students who have an idea of their future career and can get a jump start on their learning. Families will need to work with their “home” public middle school during the application process; however, you may apply to ANY specialty center within your division.
The website for Chesterfield County Public Schools offers a list of specialty centers with links to each center’s site. The page also includes links detailing the application process.
Henrico County is similar to Chesterfield with their options of specialty centers. Like Chesterfield, you must live in Henrico County to attend; however, you may apply to any of the specialty centers within the system.
Richmond Public Schools offer multiple specialty center options as well for city residents. Please note, the school board voted to make changes to the admission process for students. Unfortunately, this does affect STM students and families for some of the school choices, so please make sure to click the button above to learn more.
Powhatan County does not have its own specialty center; however, there are specialty programs within the county's Gifted and Talented program. They have TAP, which stands for "Talented Art Program." They also have "Future Problem Solvers" with 3 options to choose from. Finally, they offer the Math Club, which participates in 2 competitions per year. Students do have to test and qualify for gifted education in order to participate. Their site with specific information can be found here.
Powhatan does participate in sending county students to Appomattox Regional Governor's School, Maggie Walker Governor's School, and CodeRVA. Please see the "Governors' Schools" tab for more information.
