Religion
Welcome to Religion!
Our fourth unit is entitled: We Are Called. In this unit, we will cover the Protestant Reformation and the Catholic Church's Counter-Reformation (the Council of Trent). We will also cover the Enlightenment and how Catholics believe that faith and science work together. We will start talking about morality and how external factors form our conscience. We will have five units throughout the year and a test at the end of each unit. We will also have a project for each unit.

GEometry
Welcome to Geometry!
To begin Trimester 2, we are continuing Unit 3: Parallel and Perpendicular Lines. In this unit, students will learn how prove that lines are parallel when presented with a transversal and how to determine if two lines are parallel, perpendicular, or niether.

Spanish
¡Hola padres! The 8th graders have begun our verb unit. We have a quiz Wednesday, Feb. 20th on AR verbs -- meanings and conjugations. Quiz also includes subject pronoun review. This quiz is really a warm-up review to get us started on the verbs and to try to refresh our memories! We have spent some time reviewing USTEDES and VOSOTROS and how they are used regionally. Vosotros is a subject pronoun and verb conjugation used exclusively in Spain. I didn't even learn the vosotros in school -- my high school teacher, who was from Mexico, just skipped right over it. When I found myself living and studying in Spain I was able to pick up the vosotros as I lived there. I have discussed with several peer spanish educators on their philosophies on this matter. The consensus seems to be that a large enough number of students from our community end up studying in Spain that we absolutely should teach the vosotros so we will be learning it! Following the AR verbs we will move on to ER/IR. Gracias

Science
Unit: Force and Motion
This unit will introduce or strengthen the students’ understanding of Newton's First, Second, and Third Laws of Motion. This will include the following concepts; force, motion, velocity, friction, and collisions.
Chapter 1: Force and Velocity
The purpose of this chapter is for students to understand the cause-and-effect relationship between the force exerted on an object and the object’s change in velocity.
Chapter 2: Mass and Velocity
Students work to understand the relationship between the force exerted on an object, the mass of the object, and the object’s change in velocity
Chapter 3: Collisions
Students work to understand that forces in collisions are of equal strength, but push in opposite directions, and the effects are different for objects of unequal mass.
Chapter 4 Using Physics on Movie Set
Students will apply what they have learned about force, mass, and velocity change to a new problem: Helping a student film director decide how to change a miniature movie set so the collision scene between two model vehicles is successful. This chapter will give students an opportunity to engage in scientific reasoning and argumentation practices, while applying the knowledge they gained over the course of this unit.
