Religion

Welcome to Religion!

Our fourth unit is entitled: Sacraments, Our Way of Life. In this unit, we will begin by discussing the Old Testament Prophets. We will then review Salvation History and learn about how it culminates with Jesus. Finally, we will discuss the sacraments and how rituals of the Old Testament connect to each. We will have five units throughout the year and a test at the end of each unit. We will also have a project for each unit.

LITERATURE

Welcome to 6th Grade Literature!

The St. Monica 6th grade literature course focuses on reading and analyzing a wide range of literature including novels, poetry, short stories, non-fiction stories, biographies and autobiographies, speeches and expository texts. The expository texts will provide supplemental knowledge that will enhance the students’ enjoyment of reading. Our 6th grade students will be challenged daily to recall what they have read previously and apply that information to new material. In addition, our students will write a wide variety of responses, including essays and speeches that demonstrate their understanding of the material. The year will begin with a writing framework that guides the students through various responses to literature using an evidence based writing framework. By focusing on the state and national education standards, as outlined by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, students will develop the critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills necessary to be successful in junior high and beyond.

To see trimester three scope and sequence, click here.

Our study of English is explored through three main avenues: grammar, vocabulary, and writing.  Grammar and vocabulary are ongoing and are assessed periodically throughout each trimester.

Current unit of study in grammar is unit 4, modifiers.  Topics include:  adverbs; comparing with adverbs; negatives; and adjective vs adverb.

Sadlier Vocabulary will be assessed with a quiz on a bi-weekly basis.  After three units, students will have a cumulative assessment. The next cumulative assessment is scheduled for Tuesday, April 30th.

Now that students have completed the writing of their five-paragraph Wax Museum paper, they will begin organizing, writing, memorizing, and practicing their Wax Museum speech.  This speech will be told from first person perspective and focus on the highlights of their wax museum figure’s life.  Speeches are due on Monday, April 22nd and must be fully memorized by Monday, April 29th.

Please save the date for the performance portion of the Wax Museum on the morning of May 9th in Donovan Hall.  All are welcome!  The angels will perform at 8:45, and the saints will perform at 9:45.

Social studies

After recapping the previous unit on Egypt, we started a new unit, The Ancient Greeks. Students have been doing a variety of activities including different styles of note-taking, using graphic organizers, and class discussions. We learned about how geography affected the early Greeks, what contributed to the development of the Minoan civilization and how the Mycenaeans became a powerful military force.

Spanish

¡Hola Padres!  At the end of Trimester 2 the 6th graders took their test on the FL4K material -- overall they did very well.  We are now on to our verb unit!!  The 6th graders will memorize 32 AR verbs and their corresponding conjugations.  Currently we are working on memorizing the meanings and also common uses of infintives -- "Para" (insert infinitive) -- in order to.  "Tengo que" (insert infinitive) -- I have to.  "Voy a" (insert infinitive) -- I am going to.  "Quiero" (insert infinitive) -- I want to.  Their first assessment on this material will include only AR verb meanings (not conjugations) and the uses of infinitive listed above.  Gracias.

Science

Welcome to 6th Grade Life Science!

6th Grade UNIT: METABOLISM

Students will learn to identify the building blocks all molecules need for healthy functioning and how body systems work together to get the necessary molecules to the cells. They will also be introduced to the three main body systems involved in metabolism: the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems and how the body’s systems take in, break down, and deliver molecules to the cells.

Chapter 1: Molecules Needed by the Cells

Students will be able to explain that the body functions when its cells are getting and using molecules that come from outside the body—from the food we eat and the air we breathe. They will identify glucose, oxygen, and amino acids as molecules necessary for cellular function.

Chapter 2: Body Systems

Students learn that the body’s systems take in, break down, and deliver molecules to the cells. This includes how starches and proteins are broken down into glucose and amino acids in the digestive system, while oxygen comes in through the respiratory system

They will also come to understand that the circulatory system transports these molecules to the cells.

Chapter 3: Cellular Respiration

Students are introduced to cellular respiration, the chemical reaction that releases energy in the cells and how the energy released allows the whole body to function, both when it’s at rest and during activity.
