Religion

Welcome to Religion!

Our fourth unit is entitled: Jesus the Christ. In this unit, we will be covering the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Christ. Students will tie their participation in Mary's Way of the Cross into a project they will complete in class about the Salvation of Christ. We will also talk about the Liturgy and about the role that Mary and the saints have in our lives of faith. Finally, we will start talking about morality and how external factors form our conscience. We will have five units throughout the year and a test at the end of each unit. We will also have a project for each unit.

Our final unit of the year in literature will center on the study of Greek mythology.  Students will read classic myth from the book D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths.  The culminating assessment for this portion of the unit will be a compare/contrast essay in which the students choose a Greek myth and put it into conversation with the same myth in a different culture.

Following, students will read the graphic novel The Odyssey by Gareth Hinds.  The culminating assessment for this portion of the unit will be a persuasive essay in which the students convince Odysseus to change some portion of his journey home.

Finally, students will create their own Olympic event in which other students will compete in during the final weeks of school.  Who shall emerge victorious??

Our study of English is explored through three main avenues: grammar, vocabulary, and writing.  Grammar and vocabulary are ongoing and are assessed periodically throughout each trimester.

Our sixth unit of study in grammar is prepositional phrases.  Topics include: pronouns after prepositions; adjective phrases; adverb phrases; placing phrases correctly; and choosing correct prepositions.

Sadlier Vocabulary will be assessed with a quiz on a bi-weekly basis.  After three units, students will have a cumulative assessment. The next cumulative assessment is scheduled for Tuesday, April 30th.

Social Studies

After recapping the previous unit on Egypt, we started a new unit, The Ancient Greeks. Students have been doing a variety of activities including different styles of note-taking, using graphic organizers, and class discussions. We learned about how geography affected the early Greeks, what contributed to the development of the Minoan civilization and how the Mycenaeans became a powerful military force.

Science

Unit: Plate Motion

The purpose of this unit is for students to understand that Earth’s outer layer is made of hard, solid rock that is divided into plates and that the plates move. This includes Wegner’s Theory of Plate Tectonics, the three types of plate boundaries, and the cause and effect relationship between plate movements and the landforms they create including volcanoes, earthquakes, rift valleys, and mountain ranges.

Chapter 1: Introducing Earth’s Outer Layer

Students will learn that Earth is covered with hard, solid rock that is divided into plates.

Chapter 2: Understanding Plate Boundaries

Students will learn what convergent and divergent plate boundaries are and how the mantle and plates interact at each type of boundary.

Chapter 3: Investigating the Rate of Plate Movement

Students will learn the rate of plate motion, which is quite slow and undetectable without evidence from sources such as GPS.

Chapter 4: Science Seminar

In this chapter, students apply what they have learned about plate motion to a new context—deciding whether the geologic activity on the Jalisco Block is best explained by divergent or convergent plate movement. The purpose of this chapter is to give students an opportunity to engage in scientific reasoning and argumentation practices, while applying the knowledge they gained over the course of this unit.
