The Catherine Wheel Nursery is situated in a purpose-built foundation stage unit on the grounds of St Michael's C of E Primary School in New Marston. The Foundation Stage Unit (FSU) is spacious, light and well-resourced with a large and recently extended garden space that includes a climbing frame, mud kitchen, digging pit, sandpit and forest site. The Nursery has places for 24 children aged 3 and 4 and is staffed by very experienced and skilled staff. We are open between 9 am and 3 pm every day during St Michael's term time and also offer wrap around care. The Nursery children share the generous indoor and outdoor space with up to 30 Reception aged children.
The whole team is incredibly supportive and kind to the children. We feel that they all really care about each individual child, and work hard to produce the best outcome for them. The team's commitment goes above and beyond on a regular basis and we really appreciate the support they have given our child through nursery and into reception. Parent Feedback Survey 2025

The amazing range of activities the children get to experience, from baking to crafting to yoga to foraging in the gardens, and all in such a supportive and nurturing environment. EYFS at St Michael’s provides a fantastic foundation for many of years of school life ahead. I couldn’t ask for any more!

Nursery-aged children who attend the provision are not pupils of St Michael's C of E Primary School and a formal admissions request needs to be made through Oxfordshire County Council for places in the Reception class. More information is available from Oxfordshire County Council by clicking here. In practice, the majority of children in Nursery apply for and are offered a place in the Reception Class at St Michael’s and they have a seamless transition from Nursery to Reception knowing the routine, expectations, environment, staff and friends.
Above all, the staff are kind, caring and highly experienced which makes such a difference. I think it’s particularly fantastic that you go outdoors in all weathers and I’ve seen my daughter’s physical development and confidence in her skills really come on since she switched to this nursery. The opportunity to go to the library is something she enjoys and talks about at home, along with drawing club. It was helpful to have the meetings with her keyperson to see how she was doing. I like how you challenge the children with activities like sewing and baking. Having a close relationship with the reception class makes me confident that the transition to school will be easy.
