Rights and Responsibilities
During the lesson, we focussed on the rights we each have (both in and out of school), and the responsibilities that come with them. We discussed the importance of rights, and thought back to a time when things were different. The children each had a post-it note to record down the most important rights to them.
Taking Responsibility
We began by doing a ‘choose your adventure’ PowerPoint where the children can choose the path of the story. Options were provided and they chose the option which then led on to the next part of the story. Our story was called 'The Spooky House'.
After a number of attempts, the children completed the story with a positive outcome. They realised that each action we take has an impact on what happens next.
The children then came up with their own scenarios and possible next steps, depending on the action chosen.
Going for Goals
In this lesson, we learnt about SMART goals and how to set short, medium and long term goals. They have to be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timed.
The children then set goals for themselves: 3 goals to achieve next week; 3 goals to achieve by the end of next term and 3 goals for the end of Year 6.
The Importance of Rest
We've been learning about the importance of a good night's sleep and how to take greater responsibility for ensuring good quality sleep. Take a look at our top tips for a peaceful sleep.
Anti-Bullying Week
This week, we have been raising awareness for Anti-Bullying week. Firstly, we discussed and recapped some of the words associated with bullying, before identifying various types of bullying we may come across.
We spoke about the importance of telling, reminding the children that we are a telling school and no form of bullying would ever be tolerated. Finally, we showed support to the campaign by wearing our odd socks (see pictures below).
Respecting Myself
During the lesson, we spoke about respect both for others and ourselves. We discussed why we might respect other people - was it because they respected themselves? Or maybe because they overcame challenges?
Respect is gained through our respectful interactions with others, looking after ourselves and overcoming adversity. The children represented this in their shield, drawing an image/symbol to show how they could show respect to themselves.
Marriage
The children learnt about the different types of marriage and the history of marriage in England. To begin, we looked at images of the different types of weddings (church, registry office, Sikh, same sex, Muslim and Jewish). This prompted some good discussions about the variety of weddings.
Next, we thought about how marriage has changed and how it is different in different cultures. Finally, the children learnt about key dates and the history of marriage in England.
The children produced some brilliant posters using the facts they'd acquired.
Build a Friend
In this lesson, we recapped previous learning from Year 4 before thinking about friendship. We watched the clip of Woody pushing Buzz out of the window and discussed the choices Woody had made. Next, we thought about the consequences of his actions and how he could better manage those emotions in future.
The main part of the lesson focussed on building a friend. After discussing the qualities needed to be a good friend, the children built their friend and explained why they are important to them.
Setting Rules
In our first lesson, the children recapped their PSHE education from Year 4 before making rules that can help everyone feel safe in our Year 5 lessons.
Now the children are in Year 5, they will start to look at more grown-up topics and there might be times when they have different feelings about these. With this in mind, the children created rules for PSHE lessons so everyone can feel safe and comfortable.
