Mathematics

ELG: Number

Children at the expected level of development will:

- Automatically recall number bonds up to 5 and some number bonds to 10.

- Have a deep understanding of number to 10, including the composition of each number

25.4.24 Subtraction - the children have been practising subtraction using a ten frame.

22.4.24 Number of the Week - 6

The children have produced some fabulous work this afternoon showing lots of different ways they can represent 6!

17.4.24 Addition

This week, we have revisited addition. We have been getting on the train to Africa, Australia, the seaside and many other places! The children used number tracks, ten frames and cubes to help them add two numbers within 10.

15.4.24 Number of the Week -

This week we gave the children a challenge to create their own number of the week sheet about the number 5.  On this they were encouraged to think about different ways the number could be represented and made.  The children made some super sheets about number 5!

25.3.24 2D Shape

Today we learnt about 2d shapes. We talked about their features and sorted them in different ways.  We then used the shapes to create and continue patterns.

25.3.24 Number of the Week - 20

14.3.24 Halving

Today, we learnt how to halve a number - it was very tricky! We used cubes to help us and shared with our partner to make 2 equal groups.

12.3.24 Doubling

Today we learnt how to double numbers.  We used cubes to help us.

4.3.24 Counting upto 15 objects and putting these in order / Number of the week

Today we used cubes to count out different amounts.  We then compared the number of cubes we had which helped us to order and identify the greatest and smallest number.

Our number of the week this week is 17.

28.2.24 We continued to practise our subtraction today but had a go using the tens frame and number tracks alongside the cubes. Some children are beginning to write number sentences but we use the same language: "Mrs Bunney had 8 pancakes in her pan. She ate 3 of them. How many are left?"

27.2.24 Subtraction

Today we solved number stories and used cubes to practically solve subtraction problems.

For example, there were 9 sheep in the field. 3 ran away. How many were left?

14.2.24 More addition! We are using cubes and number tracks to help us.

9.2.24 We have been looking at adding two numbers on a number track this morning - it was very tricky but some children even managed to write a number sentence.

1.2.24 The children have enjoyed playing Numbots this week!

30.1.24 Solving Number Problems

Today the children used their knowledge of numbers upto 10 to solve a problem.  We had to find all the possibilities of making 10.  We had 10 beanbags and then split them between two baskets to find a way of making 10. For example, there were 8 beanbags in the blue basket and 2 in the pink so 8 and 2 make 10.

We discussed how to find all the possibilities we needed to do it in a systematic way. So we put all the beanbags in one basket and none in the other.  We continued by moving one beanbag from the basket at a time and placing it in the other basket to find ways of making 10.

Well done to Thea and Matilda who chose to carry out the activity themselves afterwards and wrote down the ways they found to make 10!

25.1.24 Number formation - we have been practising number formation this week - we have a rhyme to go with each one.

23.1.24 Ordering Numbers

Today the children learnt how to order  a set of numbers from the fewest to the most. We used lots of words like greatest, smallest, largest.

10.1.24 Numbers to 10 - the children practised counting objects within 10 and finding the matching numeral or representation.

9.1.24 Numbers to 10

Today in Maths we looked at different representations of numbers.  We found numerals and counted out the correct number of cubes.  The children loved playing a memory game matching numbers!

21.12.23 3D Shapes - Today, the children explored 3D shapes. They learnt some new vocabulary: vertices, edges and faces and practised using them to describe shapes. They are tricky words to learn so we will keep revisiting them.

6.12.23 Number formation

30.11.23 The children enjoyed exploring beadstrings today. They were so amazing that we even practised addition and subtraction with them!

28.11.23 Subtraction

We started our Maths session today by practicing forming some numbers correctly on our whiteboards.

We then moved onto subtraction, again using the part-part-whole model.  We explored what happened when you start with the whole and then subtract one of the parts.

For example:

6 is my whole.

4 is one of the parts.

2 is the other part.

6 subtract 4 is equal to 2.

21.11.23 & 23.11.23 Combining two groups

We continued using the part-part whole model to combine two groups to find the total.

"There are two blue dinosaurs. This is one part.

There are three red dinosaurs. This is the other part.

The whole is five.

Two plus three is equal to five."

16.11.23 The children were introduced to the concept of the part-part-whole model which helps their understanding of combining two groups.

"One part is 2. The other part is 3. There are 5 altogether."

15.11.23 The concept of zero - the children explored 'zero' today and continued to consolidate their understanding of numbers within 6.

13.11.23 Number of the Week - 4

This week, 4 is our number of the week. The children have been challenged to complete two activities based on the number 4!

9.11.23 Ordering numbers within 6

Today, our frogs got all jumbled up and the children helped to put them back on the log in the right order!

26.10.23 One more within 6

Today, we sang Five Little Speckled Frogs and practised finding "one more" than numbers within 6.

23.10.23 Counting upto 6 objects reliably

Today, the children have been counting up to 6 objects reliably.  We counted the candles on a cake and then found the matching numeral.  The children also counted out the corresponding number of cubes.

As a challenge, the children were then given a number of cubes and were asked to find different ways they could arrange these in various shapes.  Their partner had to count and see how many cubes they had used in their shapes. Some children enjoyed this so much they chose to carry on doing it!

20.10.23

ELG: Number

Children at the expected level of development will:

- Have a deep understanding of number to 10, including the composition of each number; 14

- Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5;

Today, the children have been counting one, two and three objects reliably.

18.10.23 Number of the week!

This week is number one! The children practised writing number one and found ONE object around the classroom.

16.10.23 Counting

Today we sang and acted out the nursery rhyme 'Three Blind Mice!'  We used this to practise counting out reliably a number of objects and matching this to its numeral.

09.10.23 Patterns

Today the children learnt how to recognise, describe and copy patterns.  We looked at patterns with different sizes, shapes and colours.

2.10.23 Comparing

In our Maths today we helped the teddies have a teddy bears picnic!  We sorted the items they for the picnic into groups and then compared these.  The children were able to use language like 'more' and 'less' or 'fewer' to compare the size of the groups,

28.9.23 Matching

In maths, we have been matching pairs of socks! The children have also been playing dominoes and snap in continuous provision.

ELG: Number

Children at the expected level of development will:

 - Have a deep understanding of number to 10, including the composition of each number; 14

- Subitise (recognise quantities without counting) up to 5;

25.9.23 Classifying

In our Maths session today we looked at a group of objects and discussed how we could sort them.  The children came up with some really good ideas of sorting them by size, shape, colour or type.  Some children discussed what would happen to an object if it did not fit into any categories and where that could go.  Well done everyone!
