Week of May 31, 2023

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the final week of May. It is a short week with plenty to do. Next week will be exam week. A schedule will be posted and study guides will be provided.

Reading

We completed our Unit 3 Benchmark last week. It will be coming home in the test packet for your review and signature. No corrections are needed on Benchmarks. We will be going over it in ELA.

Students have completed their final article of Achieve 3000 homework and the in class free choice The grades are posted. Students will complete the end of year level set test which will indicate the growth in your child's Lexile score since September. It is not a grade for Option C, but all scores from each level set test will be sent home with exam scores for you reference.

Writing

The writing benchmark from Unit 3 will also be in the test packet this week. Please review it with your child, focusing on format, word choice, and mechanics.

We will be trading our Animal trading cards either at the end of this week or early next week. This was an informative and enjoyable writing exercise.

Grammar

The grammar benchmark for Unit 3 is in the test packet. It will be reviewed in class. Please go over it with your child and sign it and return it by Monday of next week.

The AOP final exam primarily focuses on grammar. A study guide will be provided and is posted on my website under study guides/grammar. We will also be using our Voyages in English text book to review the necessary topics. The purple copybook is a great resource for grammar notes. There will also be a part of the exam that focuses on some writing skills. We will go through the purple copybook and star the pages that should be focused on.

Spelling

We have wrapped up our study of spelling words. There will not be an exam in spelling.

Science

We completed Investigation 5 on the Electromagnetic Spectrum and how it is related to the Visible Spectrum. Students received some notes and the study guide for this last Cell Book test planned for Friday. It is also posted on my page. Light Optics Lab Book will be collected and graded this week.

The science exam study guide will be provided this week. It is already posted. Students should use it to guide their study time. All lab books have been returned. Students should use their red copybook, lab books, and flash cards to prepare.

Book Talks

The third trimester book talks will take place this week, beginning on Wednesday. Please see the sign up list below. Students should be prepared to present their day, and possibly the day earlier should someone ahead of them on the list is absent.

Students have tips for giving a book talk and things to remember in their book talk. They also have a graphic organizer to plan the parts of their talk. That, as well as the reading log, will be collected the day of the speech.

Test packet

A new test packet will be coming home on Wednesday. Please review it, sign it, and return on Monday.

Other News

Text books and workbooks will be collected next week. Students will be coming. home with notebooks. The purple copybook may be worth saving as they have many notes on grammar and writing skills that students may refer to in fifth grade. Please continue to clean out their school bags to lessen the load when materials are sent home.

Next year's reading and summer assignments will be sent home with the report card on the last day.

Sincerely,

Maureen Clark
