Homework Hints for Parents
One of the most important things that we will focus on in Second Grade is improving their reading skills. Here are some important things to keep in mind:
Reading is a result of personal development. All children are unique in their learning and work at their own pace. Do not get discouraged if it takes your child longer to learn the basics of reading than others
WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT!
Children learn to read with more fluency and accuracy if they use reading materials that are right for them. If we give them the correct tools, they will learn the skill. If we give them the wrong tools, they will only become frustrated. In short, if your child is only able to read a picture book, please do not ask or expect them to read a chapter book. This will only frustrate and discourage them. However, if they choose a higher-level book off the shelf that you know is not right for them, feel free to read it to them or read it together!
Although it is important for them to learn to read independently, it is still vital that you continue to read to them as well!
Keep them enthusiastic about reading! Encourage them to read often and allow them to choose books that are interesting to them. Always keep a positive attitude towards reading!
Reading Hints for Parents
Children respond well to routines and consistency. Therefore, the Second Grade homework will follow the same pattern each week.
Homework will consist of math, spelling, and reading. Occasionally, an extra project or assignment in a different subject area may be given. Homework will not be graded nor be factored into your child's report card grade. This is because I encourage parents to sit with their children when they do their homework and provide assistance where needed. I do not believe in grading students on skills that they may not have mastered or understood at the time they did their homework. Homework reinforces the skills that we are learning in the classroom that week.
Students are expected to read for at least 60 minutes a week. This could consist of them reading silently, to a parent or sibling, with a friend, or being read to.
Spelling words will be given each week that contain the phonics pattern for the week. A test will be given each Friday. Math homework will be given Monday through Thursday.
