Math: During trimester three, we will be covering topics from modules 5 and 6. Some examples of the topics we will be covering are probability, statistics and geometry.
Religion: We are exploring the life of Jesus while discovering how to apply his teachings to our lives today. Ask your seventh grade student about the Kingdom of God!
2024-2025 School Theme - #FollowJesus
Using the virtue of prudence - "enables us to reason and act rightly in any given situation"
Science:
Welcome back 7th grade! We are well into semester 2 and are going to be entering our ecosystem unit. Within this unit we will do many projects looking into biomes, photosynthesis and cellular respiration. I am excited to see the work that the students will be producing in this new unit.
Social Studies:
Literature: Welcome back!
Textbook: The students are studying the elements of a fictional story. They will analyze how the author uses the setting, characters, and word choice to create suspense. We will also look at the moral of the story and how the author sometimes speaks through one of the characters to convey the theme. The short stories we will be reading include the Monsters Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling. This story is a teleplay that appeared on the hit 1960's television show The Twilight Zone.
Novel: In October we will begin the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. It is a story about a 14-year-old boy and his brothers who are growing up without parents. It focuses on social class, bullying, and how we can all feel like outsiders at times. We will analyze several different characters, look at cause and effect, and relate this story to our own lives. This is a classic novel with characters and themes the students will truly connect with!
Book Club: Starting in October, I offer a book club. This is optional but wonderful for those students that love to read. I pick a book that I feel students would enjoy and we read it over the course of a month. The goal is to read about 30 pages a week and it is just for FUN! The students usually meet Wednesdays during lunch. There is NO extra work, besides reading.
Writing Club: Saint Mary Writing Club will begin in November. Students are becoming journalists and interviewing individuals or covering events that make a positive impact on our school or the surrounding community. This club allows students to be exposed to great role models with qualities they want to emulate. On top of writing feature articles, there is a Creative Corner. This is for the students that have a LOVE for creative writing and want to share their talent by writing short stories or poems. We meet on Thursdays during lunch, so feel free to stop by and check it out!
Language Arts: Happy New Year! As we begin the new year, 7th graders will be working diligently on their writing skills. We will be studying various persuasive appeals, developing strong word choices and writing voices to be able to effectively write argumentative and persuasive pieces, and we are continuing to study proper pronoun agreement. Students will also be asked to write about how their Catholic School education has influenced them in a positive way as we prepare to celebrate Catholic Schools Week. We will also be looking at persuasiveness and techniques used in advertising. Keep a look out for a fun project regarding this topic. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me via email. I am looking forward to working with 7th graders to start the year out strong and further develop their writing talents.
