Extra Activity (Optional)

I thought it might be nice to show our support to doctors, nurses and medical professionals as they risk their health every day to fight COVID-19. Projects like Pics for Providers have become a way for parents to teach their children gratitude amid the coronavirus health crisis. I thought it would be nice for our kids to do something like this a way teach them the virtue of gratitude.

My mom is a nurse at Highland Park Hospital and I am sure these cards would brighten their day. Since there is no way to collect physical cards- we can make them on SeeSaw! I can print them out and she can deliver them to the doctors and nurses.

To make the cards go to SeeSaw:

  1. Click green + button.
  2. Click Post Student Work.
  3. Click the Drawing icon.

Once they are finished making their card just upload it and I will print them! They can make one card (or more, if they would like.)

Science

Rainbow activity on SeeSaw 🌈

  • Have your child watch the video on SeeSaw (the video is broken up into parts, so you will have to press the arrow buttons to continue on once the video stops)

Here are the instructions for conducting the Science experiment that goes along with the video (If you do not have the supplies or do not have time, please don't worry about completing the experiment)

2. Gather: a clear - plastic cup, blank paper or index card, pitcher (or cup) of water, crayons, clean up supplies.

3. Set your empty cup on the windowsill or on a pile of books.

4. Look at the floor. Can you see the shadow of your cup? If you don’t see your cup’s shadow, move the cup until you do.

5. Add a small amount of water to your cup. As your cup fills, watch for wiggling lines of light. When you see them, put your white paper where those lines are.

6. If you didn’t see any wiggling lines, stir the water with your finger and keep looking. You’ll find them!

7. Wait until the water in the cup is completely still and see what happens to those lines!

8. Now for fun... ○ Can you catch the rainbow colors on a card? ○ Without touching the cup, can you make the colors disappear? ○ Can you make the colors brighter? (Hint: colors made of light are brightest when they are in a shadow.)

9. Complete the worksheet in Seesaw. Label the colors you see!

Math

(30 minutes)

Begin Lesson 8-5 to continue using drawings to solve problems with tens and ones. In the previous lesson, students used cubes to find how many tens and ones are in a given number. In this lesson students will reverse that process by drawing models to show the number of tens and ones in two-digit numbers.

Do Solve & Share on page 341. If needed asking guiding questions like, "How many tens and ones are in 28? How could you show that?"

How do students explain that their way way allows you to not count one-by-one? Students might explain that you can count their drawings by tens and ones. If needed, ask, "Why is it easier to count the objects in your drawing than counting by ones?"

Watch Visual Learning Video on Pearson-Realize.

Continue onto page 342. Help your child with the Visual Learning Bridge in the green box at the top, Convince Me, and Guided Practice.

*If you can't pop your trunk open from inside your car - roll down a back window and I'll toss it gently into your car

*Please do not get out of your car or allow your child to get out.

Jesus heard that his friend Lazarus was very sick and went to see him, but Lazarus died before Jesus got there. Lazarus's sister Martha went out to meet Jesus. She said, "Jesus, if you had been here, Lazarus would not be dead."

Jesus told her, "Your brother will rise again."

Martha answered, "I believe that he will be raised up on the last day."

Then Jesus said: "Even though people who believe in me die, I give them life forever. Do you believe in me?"

Marth said "Yes, I believe you are God's Son." Martha went to get her sister, Mary.

Mary said, "Jesus, if you had been here, Lazarus would not have died."

Then Jesus started to cry. He said: "Show me where Lazarus is buried. If you have faith, you will see God's glory." They took Jesus to the tomb. He said "Roll away the stone."

Jesus prayed: "Father, thank you for answering my prayers, I want these people to believe that you sent me." When Jesus finished praying, he said in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" Lazarus walked out of the tomb. Many people began to believe in Jesus because he did this.

Science- We are going to kick off the new month by studying weather. Here is an exciting video for the students can watch to introduce them to weather! www.generationgenius.com/?share=9DE72

Quiz- These are optional but may be fun!

Option 1: Generation Genius has quizzes that go along with the video. However, you will need to download the Kahoot! app on your phone or tablet. It is a live quiz that is very similar to when a game show polls the audience, with the phone acting as their answer pad. Once everyone has answered, everyone's points go up. It feels much more like a trivia game than a quiz (it's also NOT for a grade, just for fun). If you would like to participate in the "quiz", download the Kahoot! app and join the quiz with the code that will pop up on the website . I will start the quiz at 11:15.

Option 2: I have attached a PDF that you can print as a paper quiz.

**Optional experiment- How To Make a Rain Cloud Experiment: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4GePPTUAjI

STEM- Mrs. Seymour has provided these instructions for your STEM activities.

Students should watch this short video of the history of the Apollo missions by NASA.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCjhCL2iqlQ

Next they download NASA's Forward to the Moon booklet.

https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/atoms/files/forwardmoonexploreractivities-1.pdf

Parents can help students go to these pages, print and complete

Tuesday, March 17

Good afternoon,

Here are your activities for tomorrow. You can choose to do them in any order and I have included a few extra activities if you are interested in doing something more.

Journal - Choose one of the story starters from the March calendar or you may write on a topic of your choice. Here are some ideas for St. Patrick’s Day - If I found a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow I would…, If I was a Leprechaun I would…, My favorite part of St. Patrick’s Day is…, We found out our teacher was a Leprechaun and…, I found a four leaf clover in the park and…, There was a rainbow in my backyard and I found…, or you could research and write about how rainbows are really formed. Draw a detailed picture and write at least 3-4 sentences about your topic. (If you are writing a fiction story think about our story hand - include the characters, setting, and three details along with a feeling sentence to end your story.) Don’t forget to put the date!

Jolly Phonics - Complete page 30.

Look at the picture of the zoo to answer the comprehension questions at the top of the page.

1. How many animals are in the tree? Students should write three (not the numeral). Same for #6- students should write two.

Anagrams (bottom of page)-

Explain that a number of other words can be made from the letters of the word elephants. Write as many words as you can make from the word elephants. (If students are having trouble, plastic or magnetic letters can be very useful).

Reading - Choose a book or books at your reading level and read for at least 20 minutes feel free to read longer though. (You may read to yourself or to someone.) After reading, choose one of the reading story worksheets to complete about one of the books you read.

Math - Continue with lesson 8-1 on page 327-328. This is a review of using counters in a tens frame. Remember to fill the tens frame with counters beginning in the top left corner moving right across the row and then moving back to the left to begin filling the second row. Continue this same pattern until you have shown the correct number of counters in the tens frame.

# 4-9, use counters to make each number and write the word or number. Students may have difficulty modeling a number using counters. Give them index cards with the number written on one side and filled ten frames on the other side. They can check their answers using these cards.

#10- If students have difficulty identifying the number of tens and ones from the number word, have them write out the numeral next to each word.

#11- Guide students to draw the 10 button from the first box in the top ten-frame and the remaining number of buttons in the bottom ten-frame.

#12- If students have difficulty getting started, ask: How many counters will you draw in one ten-frame? (10) What will you draw in another ten-frame? (The leftovers or the number of ones)

*Remember, you can also login to your Pearson account and watch the visual learning video.

Religion - Begin your religion time by taking a few moments to think about some special intentions and tell them to God. Then pray the Glory Be.

In the Name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen

Glory be to the Father,

and to the Son,

and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning,

is now,

and ever shall be,

world without end.

Amen.

In the Name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen

You may complete the following activities in any order.

Please read through Station 2 in your Stations of the Cross booklet. Carefully color the station and write your reflection (at least 3-4 sentences).

I’ve attached a PDF document for St. Patrick’s Day. You can print out the short biography on St. Patrick to read (pg. 11 of PDF) and answer the questions (pg. 12 of PDF).

Handwriting - Complete pages 38-39 about the Holy Trinity and the Sign of the Cross in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Please make sure you are taking your time and are forming your letters from the correct starting point and following the directional arrows.

Social Studies- Find your Welcome to Ireland Scholastic paper. Read about country life and city life in Ireland. Think about how country life is different from city life and how it is alike.

On the back page, read the definitions for rural community and city community, then answer the questions. You may also log into our Scholastic Account to watch the videos and play the games that go along with our reader. https://sn1.scholastic.com/home-page-logged-out.html

Login in as a student and our password is pawbook222.

Scroll down to the March readers. (I know the first graders are excited to read the April ones, but please only read the March readers and any we have already covered. We will be completing the April ones once we return to school.) Once you find the March readers click on the Welcome to Ireland. The first graders can explore the reader, watch the videos, review the vocabulary words, and play the game.

I-Ready - You may also go on your I-Ready account and work on math and reading. Spend an average of 10-15 minutes a day on each of the subject areas. https://login.i-ready.com/

Normally on Tuesday we have Art. Mrs. Smith has posted her assignments on her webpage. Here is the link:
