After taking the Lesson One spelling test on Sept. 10th, List B from lesson two will be given as a pretest. If your child scores 100% on the pretest, their spelling words for Lesson 2 will be the List C words (Challenge list). This will continue each week, with a pretest given to determine which students make the challenge list by getting 100% on the pretest for with the Basic list from that lesson.

How-to Article

Students will choose a topic that they know a lot about.

How to....draw a snowman, braid hair, make a basket, make a peanut butter sandwich etc.

They will develop an introductory paragraph to catch the readers attention. Give a list of supplies needed. Then write a step by step explanation about how to do this certain thing. (No more than 7 steps).

They will be using their Voyages book to help navigate them step by step through the writing process. Mentor texts are provided as well as multiple examples of each target skill with practice to ensure a smooth transition into their own how-to article. Their how-to articles will be graded on their ability to apply the above target skills to their own writing.
