Founded in 2016, Mapping Prejudice is an interdisciplinary team of historians, librarians, and geographers based out of the University of Minnesota Libraries who utilize digital humanities methodologies to investigate the history of racial covenants in the Twin Cities. The project set out to cultivate racial inequity awareness by processing county records and transcribing property deeds across Minnesota counties. The project set the stage for the first visualization of racial covenants in an American city by mapping racial restrictions in Hennepin county. Soon after, these efforts expanded to Ramsey County with the partnership of the Welcoming the Dear Neighbor? project. Mapping Prejudice has expanded to map over 40,000 racial covenants across Minnesota counties, with ongoing efforts in Anoka, Dakota, and Milwaukee County, Wisconsin.
