We have been back in the Twin Cities for a week and I cannot stop thinking about how wonderful of an experience this course was. Every moment in Cuba was an opportunity to learn something new about us and what we were experiencing. I have gained so much knowledge and feel like I barely scratched the surface at the same time.
The main highlight I keep coming back to in reflection is how great it was to learn alongside my classmates. I am an independent person and a frequent solo traveler. I have not traveled in a group like this since I was 16. To say I was nervous about the cohesion of the group is an understatement. I think that the structure of this course and its material helped everyone bring their best self to the experience and set appropriate boundaries for themselves. Our 14 days together really went smoothly thanks to the intentional efforts of the students and our instructors. Kudos to all 19 of us and thank you for sharing your leadership journey with us.
I am also so appreciative of the hospitality and warmth of the people of Havana. Our two weeks were filled with valuable experiences that created unforgettable memories. I sincerely hope that this was not a once in a lifetime trip. I do not recall the exact quote, but one of our lecturer’s expressed gratitude to the class for our willingness to travel to Havana and engage in the culture and conversation despite the long history of conflict our governments share. This was an impactful symbol to her because human connection and open dialogue is what breaks down barriers and resolves conflict and I could not agree more.
Last but not least, I’ve been intensely missing the Malecon and reflecting on the perfect beach day at Santa Maria beach after returning to Minnesota for a week straight of subzero temperatures.
