All university beds are required to be at a uniform height at the time a resident moves out of their assigned space.
Residents are welcome to adjust their beds to a preferred height, or bunk / loft their beds, provided that the beds are set to the required uniform height at the time of move out.
All residents have one of the 3 bed end styles pictured below. Upon move out, beds must be reset to the position illustrated below, as indicated by the red oval. Please review the video instruction to the right, to assist it returning your bed to this height Please visit the glossary page for visual definitions of terminology below.
Rauenhorst & Morrison residents, please note that the instruction video incorrectly instructs you to set bed ends with the holes up. Please see the information at the bottom of this page for more information.
Students are responsible for any and all damages made to bed parts during adjustments and/or lofting. For a list of commonly seen damages, how to avoid them, and what each bed part costs to replace, please visit our bed damage page.
Please see the video above for a visual guide to the correct height for your bed.
To raise or lower the bed, you will need 2 people and space to maneuver on both narrow ends of the bed.
These are the steps to take:
1) Remove the mattress and any bedding from the bed
2) Disengage the flat portion of the bed from the bed ends by lifting the bed flat upward while holding the bed end to the floor.
3) Ensure all 4 corners of the bed flat have been removed from the bed ends.
4) Lift or lower the bed to the closest desired height that will allow for all 8 hooks of the bed flat to be engaged with a rung within the channel of the bed end.
5) Double check to ensure all 8 hooks have engaged. If a hook is not resting on a channel rung, then the bed end can tilt, risking injury to the bed occupant and damage to the bed that the resident will be responsible for replacing.
6) Push down on the bed flat until all 8 hooks have securely locked into place.

Rauenhorst & Morrison beds should be set to a uniform height where the bed flat hooks rest on the pair of bed end rungs that are below the center of the bed end's center horizontal wooden support (see diagram above).
Finding this pair of rungs can be tricky. This is especially true since the bed ends look identical when upside down. This would be inconsequential if the bed ends actually were identical if upside down, but lofting pin holes (see to the left) are only on one pair of bed end tips, making them different on one side.
Solution: No fees are assessed to residents if their bed ends are upside down, provided that the bed flat is set to the correct height where the bed flat hooks rest on the pair of bed end rungs that are below the center of the bed end's center horizontal wooden support.
Given the potential for confusion with the above instruction, we are also waiving bed reset fees for beds that are arranged where the bed flat hooks rest on the pair of bed end rungs that are centered on the bed end's center horizontal wooden support (equivalent to the top rung in the oval above as well as the rung above it).
If you have questions, we strongly encourage you to reach out to Housing Operations for clarification (provided that it is not on a mass move out date).
Arrow Stickers: Over the summers of 2026 and 2027, Housing Operations will be placing stickers on Rauenhorst & Morrison bed parts to assist in identifying where beds should be set.
Stickers are intended for beds where the bed ends are specifically oriented to the lofting pin holes facing the floor. If one or more bed ends are set to where the pin holes face the ceiling, the stickers on the bed ends will not point to the correct rung for where the bed flat should rest. However, please know that if both bed ends are set to the same direction, and the bed flat arrows align with the bed end arrows, then even if upside down, the bed will be set to the acceptable height as described in the 3 paragraphs above. Please note that our old instructional video suggests placing the hole side up. We have found that those seeking to loft beds, prefer the hole side down, making lofting much easier, which is why we are now asking resets be done in this manner.
Please know that stickers were placed by humans, and humans are prone to occasional error. If something doesn't look right with your bed, and it is not a mass-move out date, we would be glad to answer any questions that you may have.
