Adjustments made without bunking or lofting
All university beds are required to be at a uniform height at the time a resident moves out of their assigned space.
Residents are welcome to adjust their beds to a preferred height, or bunk / loft their beds, provided that the beds are set to the required uniform height at the time of move out. All bed must be returned as instructed here.
Please visit the glossary page for examples of bed parts
This is an instruction page for ensuring that you are able to adjust your bed to your preferred height and/or to have your bed set to the correct height before moving out of your room, suite or apartment.
If you are seeking to loft or bunk your bed, then please also review the bed lofting / bunking page so as to complete a lofting agreement.
Please remember that all beds must be returned to the position the bed was set to; this must be done prior to the resident assigned to that bed move out of the space.
To raise or lower the bed, you will need 2 people and space to maneuver on both narrow ends of the bed.
These are the steps to take:
1) Remove the mattress and any bedding from the bed
2) Disengage the flat portion of the bed from the bed ends by lifting the bed flat upward while holding the bed end to the floor.
3) Ensure all 4 corners of the bed flat have been removed from the bed ends.
4) Lift or lower the bed to the closest desired height that will allow for all 8 hooks of the bed flat to be engaged with a rung within the channel of the bed end.
5) Double check to ensure all 8 hooks have engaged. If a hook is not resting on a channel rung, then the bed end can tilt, risking injury to the bed occupant and damage to the bed that the resident will be responsible for replacing.
6) Push down on the bed flat until all 8 hooks have securely locked into place.
