Vermont Commissioner of Labor Harrington spoke to the students about how they can accomplish the big dreams for their lives while making the world a better place. They have been incorporating a Thanksgiving food drive and working with their 1st and 2nd grade buddies into their classroom routines!
St Johnsbury School fifth grade classes visited the St Johnsbury Athenaeum on October 23rd for a day of learning and celebrating the ADA, the American with Disabilities Act. Students were invited to engage in a conversion about the challenges before ADA, and how accessibility has changed since the laws were passed. Youth Services Librarian Becky Hatfield read fifth grade Annette Bay Pimentel’s book All the Way to the Top: How One Girl’s Fight for Americans with Disabilities Changed Everything, and guided the students through the CYCLES art exhibition. CYCLES was curated by Inclusive Arts Vermont, an organization that presents accessible art classes and exhibitions for people with disabilities. It is on display in the St Johnsbury Athenaeum Gallery for September and October. This day ended by challenging students to come up with creative new ways to make life inclusive for all. At 1:00 PM on Tuesday, September 17th, the 5th Grade will be gathering at the flagpole to celebrate Constitution Day. Students have created their own Constitution, Preamble and Bill of Rights that they will sign during the ceremony. Students are invited to dress like the Framers or wear Red, White and/or Blue! Stay tuned for more information as students will be running for office (Class or Homeroom), developing their platforms and writing speeches!
That's a wrap on Week 1! Students have been working very hard on their Bio Poem's and their All About Me Posters. We have discussed our Goal Setting options as we have worked through Lesson 1 with our Second Step Program. We are looking to building on their foundations of creating our classroom community and now jumping into our Curricular work! Ms. Kendall and I attended the We the People Institute in Boston this summer, and we receive our new (free) textbooks on Tuesday!
