St. Joseph's Secondary School promotes a progressive and inclusive ethos. Our class groups are predominantly mixed ability settings that encourage an inviting social environment and convey value systems such as forming good and respectful cooperative relationships.
Our school community practises a blended learning approach with a particular focus on the use of digital technology for teaching and learning. Mobile devices provide an opportunity for inclusive education as they facilitate anywhere/anytime learning which allows students of all ability levels to transition instantly from individual inquiry to sharing their ideas with their peers.
Our students' and teachers' use of mobile devices is enhanced through our Learning Management Systems and, because this approach is user-controlled and interaction dependent, this makes it particularly effective for cooperative work while also enabling personalised learning experiences that support a diverse range of differentiated learners.
Our Digital Learning Team uses the The SAMR model as a framework for planning the use of technology in our school. It's a way to understand how technology can transform and redefine learning experiences. The SAMR model has four levels of integration:
Substitution is when technology replaces a traditional tool without changing the task.
Augmentation enhances the task with some benefits.
Modification allows for significant task redesign, offering new possibilities.
Redefinition enables tasks that were previously impossible.
iPad 1:1 School
At our school, every student uses their own iPad as part of our 1:1 digital learning model—an approach that has transformed teaching and learning in exciting and meaningful ways. The use of iPads supports more personalised, interactive, and engaging learning experiences, helping students take ownership of their education both in and outside the classroom.
With access to a wide range of creative and productivity apps, students can explore subjects through multimedia, collaborate on projects in real time, and receive instant feedback from teachers. The iPad also supports different learning styles, allowing students to express their understanding through video, audio, drawing, coding, and more.
For teachers, the iPad enhances lesson delivery, assessment, and classroom management. It encourages innovative teaching strategies, supports formative assessment, and helps meet the needs of diverse learners. Importantly, it also equips students with the digital skills, critical thinking, and confidence they need to thrive in today’s world.
Being a 1:1 iPad school isn’t just about using technology—it’s about empowering learners and making learning more dynamic and inclusive.

Digital Schools Awards Europe
St Joseph's Seocndary School have been recognised as a Digital Schools Award Winner and a Mentor school since 2023. We are very proud that our school has been honored as a Digital Schools Award Winner and recognized as a Mentor School in every category. This is a testament to the incredible work and dedication of our entire staff. This achievement signifies that we are leading the way in digital education, providing our students with the most engaging and effective learning experiences possible.
The program seeks to recognize the efforts of schools, teachers and students by awarding them with a digital schools award that holds recognition both nationally and in Europe. Additionally, the initiative is committed to providing support, resources, and professional development opportunities to teachers and schools. This support is intended to help schools to enhance their digital competences and educational practices related to digital technology in their school. This approach reflects a collaborative effort to leverage technology for the betterment of education, and it recognizes the crucial role that teachers and schools play in achieving this goal.
As a Mentor School, we have the unique opportunity to share our expertise and support other schools on their own digital learning journeys. This recognition brings significant benefits for both staff and students, including exclusive professional development opportunities for staff, enhanced learning experiences and 21st-century skill development for students, and increased engagement and motivation across the board.
The Digital Wellbeing Award is a special recognition programme developed under the broader Digital Schools Awards initiative. It supports schools in fostering a whole-school approach to digital wellbeing, focusing on cyber resilience, safe internet use, and the development of healthy online behaviours among students and staff. The award is available to primary, post-primary, and early-years schools across Ireland and is completely free to participate in.
The award framework is built around nine key areas, including digital competencies, online safety, ethical digital citizenship, critical thinking about online content, and school leadership in digital wellbeing. Schools begin the process by using the European Commission’s SELFIE tool to conduct a self-assessment, which helps identify strengths and areas for development. From there, schools gather evidence of their practices, such as policies, lesson plans, student activities, and staff training, before undergoing a validation process to receive the award.
Officially launched in Ireland in January 2025, the award has been developed in partnership with organisations like Webwise.ie, and supported by HP, AMD, and the Irish Department of Education. The first school in Ireland to achieve the Digital Wellbeing Award was St Joseph’s Secondary School in Rush, Co. Dublin.
Earning this award provides our school with formal recognition for our commitment to fostering positive, safe, and informed digital engagement. It supports our school community in developing confident, ethical, and resilient digital learners while also promoting a safer digital culture.
