Most learning takes place in a social environment, in which learners obtain knowledge, skills, strategies, beliefs, and attitudes by observing others. At St Joseph's Secondary School, students and teachers hold the idea of helping one another to learn as a fundamental principle of how we do things here. We see one another as resources for learning, and there is a school-wide norm that everyone's learning is everyone’s responsibility. As such we prioritise mentoring relationships where students and teachers discover and address any gaps in their understanding by explaining and demonstrating concepts to their peers. Language and communication becomes the cornerstone of these shared, learner-centred experiences.
Our use of digital technology in the classroom allows for the redefinition of how students demonstrate their learning. Students and teachers are able to collaborate with their peers in new, creative ways to realise their ideas through a variety of innovative formats. The combination of our collaborative approach and our philosophy of mentoring enables our school cohort to conceive, create, edit, reflect upon, and share content in a myriad of ways. Below you will find examples of how we support each other to improve student outcomes.
Digital Learning Team's Strategy
The Digital Learning Team at St. Joseph’s has strategically evolved from a traditional IT support model into a leadership body focused on architecting a comprehensive "Digital Ecosystem." Grounded in the Department of Education’s 2022 Digital Strategy and the school's history as an iPad pilot site, the team shifted away from an unsustainable single-person IT dependency toward a structured, three-pillar framework: Digital Competency, Resilient Infrastructure, and Proactive Safety. By separating pedagogy from technical infrastructure and engaging industry partners the Digital Learning Team has prioritised "systems thinking" to ensure that technology serves as a catalyst for learning rather than a source of distraction. The Digital Learmning Team leads this cultural shift by investing in staff confidence through peer-to-peer CPD and empowering students via a dedicated competency based modules, ensuring that high-speed fiber and Apple TV hardware are supported by a human layer of critical thinking and ethics. Ultimately, the team’s leadership ensures that these three pillars remain in balance, protecting students from digital burnout while fostering the resilience and critical thinking necessary for life beyond exams.
Building Student Digital Competency
Building student digital competency is vital for preparing learners to succeed in a technology-driven world. Beyond basic computer literacy, it empowers students to critically analyze information, collaborate effectively across digital platforms, and engage responsibly online. By integrating technology into learning, students develop essential computational thinking, creative problem-solving skills, and a strong foundation in digital citizenship and online safety. Cultivating these skills doesn't just improve academic outcomes today; it bridges the digital divide and provides students with the critical advantages and ethical understanding necessary to navigate and contribute to the future global workforce.
Accessibility is for Everyone
At the heart of our digital strategy is the belief that technology should adapt to the student, not the other way around. To achieve this, every student receives dedicated instruction on mastering iPad Accessibility settings, empowering them to personalize their devices to suit their unique learning profiles. Whether it’s utilizing "Speak Selection," adjusting display filters, or using dictation tools, these features allow students to take ownership of their educational journey.
We view accessibility through the lens of Universal Design for Learning (UDL): while these tools are essential for some, they are beneficial for everyone. By removing barriers to information, we create a more equitable environment where every learner can optimize their focus and comprehension.
This commitment to inclusivity extends across our entire school community. Our Teachers and SNAs engage in regular, in-house peer-to-peer CPD to stay at the forefront of assistive technology, ensuring classroom support is both expert and empathetic. Furthermore, we offer voluntary workshops for parents, bridging the gap between school and home. This collaborative approach ensures that our students are supported by a consistent, informed network, making a truly personalized and accessible education a reality for all.
Building Parent Digital Competency
Building parents' digital competency is crucial for creating a supportive and safe learning environment for their children. When parents are digitally literate, they can actively engage with their child's education, understanding the tools and platforms used in modern classrooms. This competence enables parents to guide their children on responsible online behavior, identify potential risks like cyberbullying, and implement appropriate safety measures. Furthermore, digitally confident parents can provide meaningful assistance with homework and projects, fostering a collaborative approach to learning. Ultimately, bridging the parental digital divide ensures equitable support, reinforcing school-based learning and empowering families to navigate the digital world together effectively.
Student Leadership: The Tech Team
Our student-led tech support team empowers students to develop technical skills and problem-solving abilities. It promotes a culture of peer support and collaboration, fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility for technology in the school community. It enhances digital literacy and confidence among students, while also relieving the burden on teachers and staff, ensuring smooth technology integration and support within the school environment. Additionally, it creates leadership opportunities for students and encourages them to explore potential career paths in technology and IT support.
In-house CPD takes on many guises in the school. Best practice is modelled for colleagues through presentations at Whole School Planning Meetings. In-house peer-to-peer CPD facilitates knowledge sharing and collaboration among colleagues, enabling the exchange of best practices and innovative ideas. Peer-led CPD promotes a culture of continuous learning and professional growth within our school. It fosters a sense of empowerment and ownership among our staff, as they actively contribute to the professional development of their peers. This approach also creates a supportive and collaborative work environment while being tailored to the specific needs and context of our school. Below yuou will find the proposed variety of in-house CPD to be scheduled throughout the school year.

Partnerships with Educational Specialists
General IT providers often do not understand the unique rhythm of a school day, and the specific needs of school comuunities. Partnering with education specialist suppliers who have actual experince of supporting educational institutions is an absolute must. Ultimately, these partnerships save about 300 hours of admin time a year. By letting experts handle the "complex regulations," your leadership team can get back to what they do best: focusing on education.
