Saint Joseph School

5th Grade

Mrs. Poston will teach writing and science to all 5th graders.

Mrs. Hollis will teach ELA skills and social studies to all 5th graders.

Math, reading, and religion will be in homeroom classes.

Math

-We will use Go Math & Engage NY in addition to a variety of other resources to meet students diverse needs in math. Students will be able to progress at their own speed, and I will provide daily enrichment to students as needed.

-We will learn about place value of whole numbers & decimals, rounding, prime & composite numbers, factors, and more in Number & Operations in Base 10.

-We will learn to add and subract whole numbers, decimals, fractions, & mixed numbers.

-Students will build and master fluency in both addition and multiplication of one digit numbers.

-We explore and solve multistep word problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, & division.

-We will explore geometry through classifying angles and two dimensional shapes.

-We will learn how to measure and solve problems using both U.S. Customary and Metric systems.

Reading

-We will learn to become active readers through think-aloud codes, highlighting and annotating text evidence, and finding supporting details.

-Will will read a variety of texts-informational/nonfiction, literary/fiction, drama, novels, opinions, and poetry.

-We will make connections between texts, focusing on themes & characters.

-We will develop comprehension and fluency skills.

-We will make daily connections to reading and writing, so students will have many opportunities to respond to a variety of texts.

Language Arts

-We will alternate spelling and vocabulary units each week with tests typically on Fridays. (online vocabulary resources)

-We will focus on different types of writing: informational, narrative, opinion, and research.

-We will develop skills such as sentence and paragraph structure and compare and contrast texts.

-We will practice using capitalization and punctuation correctly.

Science

-We will use the Next Generation Science Standards to explore and learn through engineering design with STEM and experiments. I will provide needed text for students instead of using one textbook.

-We will participate in weekly STEM and/or science experiments. Students will reflect on their work and discoveries in their science journals.

-We will explore physical science, life science, earth & space, and engineering & technology.

Social Studies with Mrs.
Hollis

-We will learn the history of the United States

-We will learn about the major geographical regions, & landmarks in the United States.

-We will learn about different cultures and traditions.

Religion

-We will learn about the 3 persons of the Holy Trinity- God the Father, God the Son, & God the Holy Spirit.

-We will discuss the mystery of the church and people of God.

-We will learn about the sacraments and their role in our faith.

-We will use a variety of prayers during the day, including the rosary.

-We will discover the lives of saints.
