Mrs. Qualls

About Mrs. Qualls

Hola!

My name is Araceli Qualls and I am the Spanish and French teacher at St. Joseph High School. I am originally from Mexico city, but I feel like a West Virginian because this has been my home for 18 years now.

I teach all Spanish levels that includes Spanish 1-3, Honors and AP Spanish Language and Culture and I am very excited to start our French program where I will be teaching French 1 and 2.

I love to travel! I have visited 8 countries and traveled throughout the United States and Mexico. I have lead 2 school trips one to Puerto Rico in 2017 and Costa Rica in 2019.

As a foreign language teacher, I believe that my ultimate goal is for my students not only to learn a language but also to open a window to the world to other cultures, to be more understanding and receptive of the way other cultures act or react in certain ways and to plant a curiosity seed in them to wanting to learn more not only about the language but other cultures as well, not only around the world, but those within our own country.

I have always had a love for teaching, since I was little, I used to play teacher and help my neighbors with their homework. I did not pursue a career in education in college, but after working in the corporate world for 10 years I got the opportunity to teach Spanish in High School. As a Spanish native speaker, I want to share with my students the love for my language, to change their minds from difficult to diverse, showing them the different accents and regional words through movies, documentaries, and music.

I care about my students, and I want to add to their tool box, abilities that can help them to succeed later on in life, be more confident, work with others, communicate better, learn from their mistakes. My biggest reward has always been the students that in the lower levels say that they are not good in Spanish and they will only stay the “required time” but end up staying all 4 years in High School and pursue a minor in Spanish or Hispanic studies.
