The Lobotomy Doctor

  • Introduction:

The topic for my social studies fair is going to be about looking into who the Lobotomy Doctor, Walter Jackson Freeman II, why he wanted to perform brain surgery in the first place, and how he did this without being sent to jail, due to the fact that he had no license to perform surgeries. The dates covered in this project will cover from when Walter Freeman was born in 1895 when he started practicing, to when he died in 1972 to some of modern day advancements. Overall, learning about historical events can help to shape the future by individuals being able to learn about the past, trying to learn from some of the mistakes that were made, trying not to repeat those mistakes, and by people being able to learn about what happened to shape our country and the whole world overall. I will most likely discover historical themes of Medical History, U.S. History, mathematical and scientific history, and psychology themes, in doing this project. My purpose for researching this topic is to learn exactly what Walter Freeman II, did for a living, why he did it, how he did it, how he didn’t get arrested, and why millions of people believed he was a medical genius.
