Conclusion

  • Conclusion:

"Lobotomy gets them home" was Dr. Walter Freeman’s motto. The lobotomy doctor became known for being one of the few individuals that could perform a lobotomy, and have a larger success rate rather than a larger death rate. Dr. Freeman became one of the first neurosurgeons to discover the lobotomy and the orbital approach to the surgery. He claimed to have helped hundreds of thousands of individuals over 10-15 years he operated on over 3,000 patients and rarely had his patients die physically during the procedure. While much more can be said about the way his patients were after the procedure mentally, some became unrecognizable from how they once were. Going from crazy to calm or going from being very energetic to very still, this may seem to be better for some but in some cases, patients were given life-altering changes to their minds, character, and overall futures. He might have believed that he was fixing some aspects of a person but their minds, thoughts, and personalities may have never stood a chance to the ice picks and metal strips. Even though Freeman came up with the trans-orbital lobotomy he was never truly certified to perform surgeries so he technically did all the lobotomies he ever did almost illegally. In the end, Dr. Freeman was able to help some patients. While he killed 3 in the process of his rampage of performing this life-altering surgery. The last woman he killed, due to her having a brain bleed on the table, ended his career. So one needs to ask themselves do you think that the lobomy should have ever been a highly practiced medical procedure to begin with?
