After almost nearly twenty years of being in Afghanistan, the fourth U.S. president to serve during the War in Afghanistan, Joe Biden called for the United States withdrawal from Afghanistan. He set the symbolic date of September 11, 2021, as the date that all troops would have left the country by. The withdrawal began in May of the same year. On August 6, the Taliban made a sudden resurgence that lasted for 10 days in which they took back the entire country. The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan quickly collapsed and President Ashraf Ghani was forced to flee to the Uniter Arab Emirates. The Unites States Embassy was evacuated as well and thousands of civilians rushed to flee the country before the Taliban arrived.
In response to the sudden Taliban resurgence, President Biden temporarily deployed about 6,000 troops to help with the evacuation on August 14. On August 26, 2021, thirteen American soldiers and at least 60 Afghans were killed in a two bombing attacks at Kabul International Airport. The terrorist group ISIS-K claimed responsibility for the attacks. Finally, on August 30, the last US troops left Afghanistan.
