After almost 20 years, the war in Afghanistan has finally ended with the United States’ chaotic withdrawal in August of 2021. The United States’ initial goal, when it went into Afghanistan, was to drive out al-Qaeda and Taliban forces. It accomplished its goal at the time, however, the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan has led to the resurgence of the Taliban as they took back control of the country in days. Now, months after the withdrawal, not only has the Taliban come back, but ISIS-K and al-Qaeda have also begun to resurface. Colin Kahl, undersecretary of defense for policy, stated that they “have the intention to” attack the West and its allies. This could likely lead to the United States becoming involved once again in Afghanistan in the future. This begs the question, should we have left Afghanistan?
