Objectives
This is where I post, specifically, what we will be learning this week.
Comprehension Focus + Oral Language Focus: Hoot (class novel)
How do Comprehension Checks work?: Students will be quizzed on each chapter of our class novel.
Typically, there will be two parts to the quiz.
The first part will ask students, through multiple choice questions, to identify different characters, settings, and key events. The first part will be closed-book.
The second part will ask students, through short-answer responses, to identify and recall specific details throughout the specified chapter. The second part will be open-book.
Writing Focus: Beginning of the Year Writing Conferences/Check-Ins (using their Writing Sample from the first week of school)
Grammar Focus: Unit 1/ Lesson 2 - Complete Subject and Complete Predicate, Unit 1/Lesson 3 - Simple Subject and Simple Predicate (we will begin lesson 3, but students will not take this assessment until next week)
Spelling and Vocabulary Routine
In 4th and 5th grade, we use the same words for our spelling and vocabulary list. We study 12 words every two weeks. After we introduce the words on a Monday, and then there is a spelling test on the Friday of that week. Then, we work with the words again for another week and take a vocabulary test the following Friday.
Here is the expected schedule of spelling and vocabulary tests:
Unit 2 Words: abandon, assault, convert, dispute, impressive, justify, misleading, numerous, productive, shrewd, strategy, villain
The Unit 2 Spelling Test will be on Thursday, September 18th.
The Unit 2 Vocabulary Test will be on Friday, September 26th.
Spelling/Vocabulary Study Schedule
This is the Vocabulary Words Student Schedule that our class will be following!
Vocabulary Flashcards - How do I set them up?
Students may use the Vocabulary Flashcards Helping Guide to help them create their flashcards for each unit.
Weekly Homework Assignment -
Independent Reading
Each week, for homework, students are asked to read for a certain amount of time each day.
Students should be reading books that are appropriate for their reading level. If students need assistance choosing the right books for them, of if they'd like me to hand-pick books for them, they may always ask me!
