Objectives
This is where I post, specifically, what we will be learning this week.
Comprehension Focus + Oral Language Focus: My Father's Dragon (class novel)
How do Comprehension Checks work?: Students will be quizzed on each chapter of our class novel. Before students take each chapter's comprehension check, we will always do a Review Day in-class. Students will receive a graphic organizer on this Review Day that they're welcome to take home and review. Lastly, if students would like to take their novel home to reread sections, they're always welcome to!
Typically, there will be two parts to the comprehension check.
The first part will ask students, through multiple choice questions, to identify different characters, settings, and key events. The first part will be closed-book.
The second part will ask students, through short-answer responses, to identify and recall specific details throughout the specified chapter. The second part will be open-book.
Writing Focus: The Writing Process (Prewriting, Drafting, Revising, Editing, Publishing), Personal Narrative
Grammar Focus: Singular Nouns, Plural Nouns, Irregular Plural Nouns
Spelling and Vocabulary Routine
In 4th and 5th grade, we use the same words for our spelling and vocabulary list. We study 12 words every two weeks. After we introduce the words on a Monday, and then there is a spelling test on the Friday of that week. Then, we work with the words again for another week and take a vocabulary test the following Friday.
This week (1/5/26 - 1/9/26), we will review the vocabulary for Units 4 - 6.
Here is the expected schedule of upcoming tests:
Friday, January 9th: Units 4 - 6 Vocabulary Test
