"Einstein’s Definition of Education: "is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school."
This refers to the experiences, values, lessons learned and education outside the classroom - This is where sport has a critical role to play.
Welcome to the Boys' College Tennis Club
Masters in Charge Message
Tennis at the Boys' College is a destination sport for many of the top players in South Africa and abroad.
The programme not only accommodates the best players but also provides opportunities for the intermediate players to develop and hone their skills to reach a competitive level. In the words of Roger Federer one of the greatest sportsmen ever: "When you do something best in life, you don't really want to give that up, and for me it's tennis."
Being part of the Central Gauteng League with more than 56 schools participating from the premier league to various other levels, players are afforded strong competition aligned to their ability. Most of our teams from 2nd's to 5th's compete against other schools' 1st teams. This is testimony to the very high level of coaching, talent and development our programme provides.
Generous donations from present/past students and parents have provided the Boys' College with some of the best tennis facilities in the country. This allows us to host our own annual tournament over Easter with 8 of the top schools in South Africa attending.
Summer fixtures are played on Mondays and Fridays within the Gauteng Central League competition. Various National tournaments hosted in Stellenbosch, Bloemfontein and Kwa Zulu Natal are attended by our 1st team.
This provides every player with the environment where he can develop at his own pace whilst enjoying the experience and fostering lifelong friendships.
Tennis is a popular and well organized sport at the college, run by dedicated staff members with the support of a strong parent group. The tennis at Saints affords the boys the opportunity of playing competitive sport across many different skill levels, with the challenge system allowing players to test their abilities against their peers on a regular basis.
Tennis is unique in that we can play as individuals as well as a team. Playing as an individual teaches one perseverance, determination, strength of character and the ability to focus on a specific task. The team element provides us selflessness, camaraderie and loyalty to the St Stithians badge. All of these characteristics being important in the development of a Saints Knight.
We have a very exciting year of tennis ahead of us. Tennis will celebrate its 10th anniversary of participation at the St Stithians Easter Festival; followed by an exciting tour to Barcelona and the Sanchez Tennis Academy in Spain during April. Our hope is that the 2023 tennis boys will continue the long tradition of sporting excellence on the college tennis courts.
My goal for 2023 is to uphold the values that have been instilled in me on the tennis court and to be a good role model for the tennis players at St Stithians; and to leave the sport at the end of the year even stronger than it already is.
