The first ever derby match against St John's was played in 1954 by the U15 and U13 teams. The score is mercifully not recorded.

The first ever 1st XV played in 1956 and the following year the white rugby jersey was donned for the first time.

The annual Kearsney trip was first held as early as 1957. Kearsney defeated Saints 59-3 in the rugby match.

In 1968 the first rugby tour to Natal took place. By 1971, 350 of the 395 College boys played rugby and Saints recorded its first 1st XV victory over St John’s. Saints came back from 0-8 down at half-time to beat their rivals 11-8.

By 1973 the school was able to field 18 rugby teams. The 1st XV went on tour to Cape Town and in a busy season scored 70 tries in 16 games. Coach Tim Clifford commented: “The school began its sports career with softball. I have a feeling that the stress was rather on the ‘soft’. Today, in any case, we are a rugby school and up with the best of them. It is rugby that matches featherweights with heavyweights and demands an equal performance of them. Rugby recognises fear and timidity and aims at replacing them with confidence - the confidence that develops in the minds of the physically fit."

Of the 1978 inter-house rugby Clifford wrote: “When brother fights brother we have a domestic fight; when the game spreads we have a civil war; but when Saints fight Saints it’s all Heaven let loose. A spate of injuries therefore led to the cancellation of the Inter-House competition after the first round’’.

The first Easter Rugby Festival took place in 1984, the same year that Saints beat St John's 39-0 and 5 players made the Transvaal Craven Week side.

In 1985 Gary de Decker and Andrew Diack played in the Craven Week and Andrew was selected for the Transvaal XV. In 1988 six players were invited to Craven Week trials of which Thornton and Trolip made the final trials.
