S2 have started working on a unit of work looking at Water and Sustainability as a context for learning.
Aspects they have been and will be looking at are:
Water processing in living things, urinary system, maintaining water balance
The need for water recycling and the water cycle
Reducing water waste in the home
The end of this unit will be marked with a project-based learning activity where pupils will be using the knowledge and skills they have been developing and apply these to build a water filter for the country they have been allocated.
To introduce our S2 to the areas of STEM and where it can be used, we carried out two STEM challenges. The first of these challenges was to design and build the tallest possible tower out of only spaghetti and marshmallows. Secondly, pupils worked to construct a balloon-powered rocket car with the aim for it to travel furthest in a race against the rest of the class.
In both of these challenges, pupils impressed us with their determination and resilience with both the design process and building of their towers/cars. We saw some impressive results and the teamwork demonstrated by our young people was fantastic.
