What have we been doing this term?
STEM Challenges
Colour Theory
World Space Week
Our young people worked in small groups to construct a tower solely out of spaghetti and marshmallows. They were each given a role and had to keep to their budget of £400. Pupils worked well in their groups, developing their communication and teamwork skills while showing creativity and logic.
The second STEM challenge our S1 carried out was to build a Balloon-powered Rocket Car. For this task pupils again had to design their rocket car within a budget, utilising their numeracy skills which they are developing within STEM. There were some engineering difficulties with constructing these cars but pupils showed real perseverance and determination to get their car to work.
Pupils playing 'quiz, quiz, trade' showing off their Colour Theory knowledge.
This topic of work is introducing young people to the subject of graphic communication and the importance of colour in graphic design. They have been learning about the colour wheel and how to use contrasting, harmonising, advancing and receding colours to portray different emotions and information.
Pupils are now designing a juice can and a sweet wrapper using the knowledge they have gained.
World Space Week is celebrated 4-10th October every year. The focus for this year is 'Space and Sustainability'. Pupils have been working in groups to design and build their own satellite out of recycled materials which could be used to monitor our planet. To the right are some examples of the brilliant satellites that were produced!
