Curriculum Offer at Dunblane High School
Curriculum Offer at Dunblane High School
Broad General Education
At Dunblane High School we endeavour to provide a rich and fulfilling curriculum, with a range of experiences for all our young people as they transition through the phases of their educational journey. Central to this process is that we provide the environment for young people to develop the four capacities to become successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens. The principles for curriculum design: challenge and enjoyment; breadth; progression; depth; personalisation and choice; coherence; relevance are encapsulated within the curriculum we offer and are critical to the educational development and progression towards the Senior Phase of education. Throughout the BGE opportunities to develop skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work (including career planning skills) with a continuous focus on literacy, numeracy and health and wellbeing are embedded within the curriculum.
In S3, young people have a degree of personalisation and choice and specialisation, as we ask them to streamline slightly the subjects that they continue to study for this year prior to the Senior Phase commencing.
Senior Phase
As young people prepare to move into the Senior Phase (S4) of their education, further specialisation is required and we offer a range of subjects from the six curricular areas, along with core subjects of Physical Education, Religious and Moral Education and Personal and Social Education. On entering S4, young people will invariably study 7 certificated subjects in depth (English and Mathematics are compulsory, pupils choose 5 further subjects). This is the start of young people building their lifelong portfolio of qualifications. The qualifications we offer allow young people to plan their pathway through the senior phase and to the next stage of their educational journey. We have excellent links with Forth Valley College (FVC) and the courses provided by FVC augment and enhance the offer we provide at Dunblane High School.
Post Dunblane High School
We want all our young people to leave Dunblane High School at the appropriate time for them and for them to move onto a positive destination. We want our young people to leave our school with the academic portfolio which will allow them to progress their learning/career pathway post Dunblane High School into further or higher education, employment or training/apprenticeships.
Critically, we want our young people to have had the experiences and opportunities throughout their learning journey within our community which has shaped them into fine young adults, with the principles and values which allows them to be happy and to go out into society and make a positive difference.
