Bass Clarinet

Bass Clarinet

Even though it looks like a wooden saxophone, the bass clarinet is just like a bigger version of the clarinet! It produces a tone very similar to the clarinet, just much lower! It uses the same fingerings and embouchure as clarinet. 2-4 students will be selected to play bass clarinet each year. Students chosen to play bass clarinet will switch over at the end of the first semester of sixth grade. Bass clarinet players are selected from the beginning clarinet class.

Physical Characteristics

It is important that students be able to sit up completely straight when asked. It is helpful if students have longer fingers and a large air capacity.

Other Considerations

Bass clarinet players are responsible for maintaining a working stock of 3-4 quality reeds. Bass clarinets are provided by Stillwater Bands for a yearly rental fee of $50 per year to handle yearly upkeep and maintenance.
