Pink Day at St. Francis Xavier: Protect, Include, and Serve With Love

Introduction

Knights of StFX, hello! This year, we took a break from our uniform and had an "All Pink" civvies day on Thursday, October 2nd. This civvies day, we encouraged every Knight to wear all the pink clothing they could find in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A day prior to October 2nd, Knights had the opportunity to wear our school-issued pink t-shirt of 2025, purchased using School Cash Online to their classes throughout the day.

Origins of Pink Day

Pink Day, also referred to as Pink October, is a day in which many local communities such as StFX unite to advocate for those affected by breast cancer to promote early detection and research. By wearing pink and organizing events, we make an attempt to communicate to those battling breast cancer that they are not alone, as they have support systems within their communities that offer hope, strength, and encouragement.

Pink Day Activities

There were many ways students could support Breast Cancer Awareness Month this school year. For instance, students could support the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation by purchasing a pink t-shirt, attending the auditorium's activities during lunch, and buying tickets for the volleyball or football game. These lunchtime activities consisted of the opportunity to decorate yourself with pink paint or gems, purchase pink merchandise (pink hats, feathers, necklaces, etc.), and get a memorable picture taken of you and your friends using trendy poster cut outs! In addition to this, balloon animals and bracelet making scored themselves a table each at the event. Along the sidelines, you were able to participate in a game of cornhole, or jump into a competitive game of kahoot. There were treats being sold to indulge yourself in; chocolate and vanilla pink day themed cupcakes which were baked from scratch by our fellow students, wrapped up and ready to be handed out. This concept was a hit among the crowd! As many students had shown up, emphasizing the support we have for those battling against breast cancer.

Volleyball & Football Game

The Knights who attended the volleyball and football game showed “top-notch” school spirit. At the volleyball game, athletes from StFX faced the Titans in the gym during 4th period. As for football, the juniors competed at 4:30 and the seniors at 6:30 out on our field; the seniors lost and the juniors won. Despite the outcomes, both teams effectively stepped out and displayed what it meant to be a knight of StFX by making outstanding and remarkable efforts. Students reported delicious meals from food trucks, fun and upbeat music, as well as encouraging cheers from our fellow cheerleaders.

The purpose of these games was to raise awareness about the struggle those with breast cancer go through. As well as fund the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. With the help of students who bought our t-shirts, purchased tickets, and attended the events, StFX was able to effectively raise money.

A Student’s Words

Many people at the event paused to consider why Pink Day exists. One student's spoken words caught our attention: “It’s my first time seeing so many people wearing pink in support of those dealing with breast cancer.” – Sara Elhalees, a Grade 11 student. Comments like this show that students and staff at StFX stand for early detection of and the battle against breast cancer. This claim shows initiative to learn, and this awareness among others is the first step towards eliminating all types of cancer.

Inspiring Quote About Pink Day

Reminder, Pink Day exists to encourage those who are experiencing or have been affected by breast cancer. Angelina Jolie once said, “I do not feel any less of a woman. I feel empowered that I made a strong choice that in no way diminishes my femininity.” The statement came in context of Jolie's health decision to prevent breast cancer. Jolie’s statement tells us that strength and femininity can coexist, and encourages us to openly support awareness month by protecting, including, and serving with love.

Conclusion

Simply put, StFX’s Pink Day was more than just a fun event; it was a powerful reminder of unity, compassion, and hope. By wearing pink, participating in activities, and supporting a fundraiser, our community showed what it truly means to stand together for a meaningful cause. Every shirt purchased, every game attended, and every act of kindness helped raise awareness for breast cancer and those affected by it. Together, we proved that even small gestures can make a big difference in spreading strength and support. Knights are eagerly waiting for another Pink October at StFX.
