Career Fair Opens Doors to Future Opportunities at StFX

On September 25th, StFX had its annual career fair, where post-secondary institutions, local businesses, skilled trades, and student-initiated clubs participated. The event provided the students with an opportunity to learn more about some of the potential career areas and also obtain a notion of what they will need to know in order to succeed in their career after high school.

The atrium was overflowing with interactive exhibits, information booths and networking opportunities. The guidance counselors encourage students of all grade levels to attend the event with emphasis on getting a head start in careers. The teachers said that the fair was especially useful to students preparing for applications to post-secondary institutions this fall.

Several of StFX’s student organizations were also in the list of exhibitors. The DECA club, which prepares students for careers in business and entrepreneurship, focused on transferable skills students gained from competitions and workshops conducted by the DECA club. “DECA is not just about winning awards; it is about proving that you have what it takes to step into the world of businesses through the use of communication skills, critical thinking, and leadership, especially in an environment as competitive and nerve-racking as DECA,” said Areeb Siddiqi, a DECA executive.

The Model United Nations (MUN) club also received lots of interest from students who were interested in global issues and diplomacy. This club gathers together representatives of a nation and works to come to a peaceful resolution beneficial to all. The executive of the MUN club, Danish Khan, said, “Model UN forces you to think critically and speak with confidence. Those qualities are invaluable, whether your pursuit is politics or law or any field where you do anything for a living that involves communicating well.”

Students left the fair with brochures, contacts and new views on their choices in their future. Many were grateful for the different opportunities on offer, from post-secondary options to extracurricular engagement.

The career fair still remains one of StFX’s most popular events, and speaks to the school’s confidence in its ability to prepare students for life beyond graduation. By putting them in touch with mentors, institutions and other peers, the fair remains a cornerstone in helping to guide students towards their next steps.
