We offer two Math options for 6th graders; one being an on-grade-level pathway and the other being an accelerated pathway. The on-grade-level pathway is what it appears to be; a 6th grade student taking a 6th grade Math course. The accelerated pathway, however, allows for a 6th grade student to take 7th grade Math.
Student placements will be determined by the following criteria:
If a student passes the advanced Math placement test that will be administered in May, then he/she will qualify for advanced Math in 6th grade.
If a student finishes with an “A” final average (>90) in 5th grade Math, then he/she will qualify for advanced Math in 6th grade.
If a student finishes with anything less than an "A" final average (<89) in 5th grade Math and fails to pass the advanced Math placement test, then the student will be required to take the on-grade-level Math course in 6th grade.
*If a student qualifies for advanced Math in either fashion (passing the placement test or finishing with an "A" in 5th grade), then the parent is required to sign a form acknowledging that their child will be enrolled in an Advanced Math course.
*Once a student is placed in a Math course, they are required to remain in that course for the remainder of the school year. A student in 6th grade math cannot move up to Advanced math and, similarly, a student cannot move down in the course of the year.
*If a student is in the on-grade-level Math course in 6th grade, then he/she will STILL have the opportunity to move to advanced Math in 7th grade if he/she finishes with an overall average of 90 or higher in 6th grade or if he/she passes the accelerated Math placement test at the end of his/her 6th grade year.
