ELA: Amplify CKLA, Grade 5
ELA is comprised of reading, language arts, spelling, vocabulary, and writing. Students will have a weekly story with specific content areas to focus on each week. These areas may include: story elements, comparing and contrasting, point of view, text structure, and many others. Language arts and spelling will also have specific focus areas each week including: conventions of Standard English, parts of speech and their functions. Students will have multiple opportunities to apply their knowledge to their own writing. Students will participate in a writing workshop where they will work to develop pieces using the full writing process in argumentative/opinion, informative, and narrative writing styles.
Social Studies: Studies Weekly: Level 5
Social Studies focuses on history with a brief overview of the United States as a young country, the Civil War, westward expansion and its effects on economic growth and other cultures. The fifth grade curriculum also covers the United States and its rise through the early to mid-20th century. Students will reflect on citizenship (including digital citizenship) and social responsibility in our community, state, nation, and world. In addition to topics discussed students will also learn about West Virginia studies pertaining to the same time period. Students will also discuss and report on current events.
Science: Macmillian/McGraw-Hill Science: A Closer Look, grade 5
Fifth grade science focuses on both content and application with earth resources, the weather, space, matter, cells, and ecosystems. Students will create an interactive notebook to record class notes and evidence of understanding. A variety of science investigations will be conducted throughout the year so students may apply and explore the concepts.
Math: Curriculum Associates McGraw Hill, grade 5
Ready Math focuses on problem solving as well as basic operations in a think-share-compare format. We will be discussing units including numbers and operations in base ten, numbers and operations in fractions, operations and algebraic thinking, measurement and data, and geometry.
At the end of the school year, students will take a math placement test to determine the math course they will take in middle school. Please see the 6th Grade Math Placement Information page for more details.
Religion: Sadlier We Believe, grade 5
Students will read lessons in their text, complete notes, and activities all digitally, and be assessed through chapter and unit reviews. Our focus this year is on living a life with God and Christ through the Church, prayer, service, and sacraments. In addition, students will prepare for the ARK test which assesses faith knowledge.
