The connection faculty and staff create with first-year students is critical. This session will explore practical ways higher education professionals can interpersonally influence college student retention and persistence using concepts from counseling theory to practice. Session participants will learn how to help students decrease cognitive dissonance and increase their resilience as they work towards achieving their degree. This is not about increasing the amount of, altering the medium of, or increasing the time you spend on interactions with students. This is about using the time you do have with students more intentionally and effectively. Afterall, we often have the same goal as our students- to help them graduate!

This presentation will provide immediate, impactful strategies and free tools to cultivate belonging and community within the synchronous and asynchronous classroom and with campus student support services before class begins, on the first day, in the first five minutes of each class, and through grading feedback. Attendees will practice strategies that can be implemented in conversations, communications, and assignments, and the facilitators will illustrate how instructors and student success staff can, on the first day, learn about obstacles a student might be facing in order to connect that student with campus support resources. Prepare to be engaged!
